I was at a Heritage show on Sunday. Saw some old cars and trucks, and tractors, and heard a local country band with a terrible sounding singer. Not too many showing their stuff, maybe due to Father's day. But I did see one cool Funk 8N with the inline 6 engine. I would think it would be one heck of a worker.
It had a tag on the engine saying it was an industrial engine. What was the difference between the industrials and a regular car or truck version?
Are there many of these engines still around?
Are rebuild parts still available?
Thanks.

Check out this link. Industrial engines usually had harder valves and valve seats than a car engine, plus bigger oil pans and oil pump pickups. Otherwise the engines are pretty much the same. There was the common 226 CI version and a higher power 254 CI. There is still a following for the flathead sixes and engine parts as well as some aftermarket hotrod parts are still available.

With the extra power, it was not uncommon for differentials and axles to get broke. The 8N could pull a 3-bottom plow whereas the stock 8N could only manage 2. Used reasonably, the Funk 8N was a workhorse.

Randy..... ..the Ford "Industrial" 6-cylinder generally has a LARGER RADIATOR 'cuz it don't gitt ram-air from hy-way driving. It also has a "governor". Some of the Industrial-4's had magneto ignition. Flathead-6 parts are readily available as pickup parts. Funk records were lost in factory fire but reliable guesstimates there were 6000 to 8000 6-cyl conversions. And about 250 flathead-V8 conversions. Considering that there were nearly 1,000,000 flathead 4-cylinder N-Tractors made, so yeah, 6000 is kinda rare. Other than fer "braggin' rights", modern 60hp tractors out perform the lite-weight 90hp Funks..... ..Dell
