Hello I have a 8n that has low oil pressure. I put a new pump in it and when it is cold it jumps up to around 30psi, but once it warms up it drops to zero at an idle and around 5 psi at full throttle. Do you think this needs bearings put in?

just had my motor redone and the bearings were not all that bad either was the oil pump. rings were shot and she smoked some. oil pressure was bad then also.

no cam bearins in the beast.

it seems that if the bearings were bad it would leak the erl out there on the bottom of the mains and top of the rod bearings. anything is better than puttin $1800 into a new motor.

use sae 40 oil and if she still smokes...so what. if you want, you can order a new long block for $1800 instead of rebuilding her.

Sure sounds like bearing clearance, but you might want to try 40 or 50 weight oil first & see what that does for pressure - probably won't hurt it any more than it already has & might get you a few more hours of seat time.

My 2N was running 30 lbs cold, but hot it will get down to 5-8lbs at idle and 18-20 at wot. I put a quart of Lucas oil addidtive in it and it now rund 25 at wot and 10 at idle when hot.

if you wind up tearing engine down dont forget the cam bearings...they will cause low oil pressure too.
also plasti gauge works well but its no replacement for a micrometer...you need to check rods and main bearing journals for out of round...not just clearance.

Don't take this personal, but these here N motor's don't have cam bearings. The cam runs straight in the block. Now if the area of the block that the cam rides in is damaged or excessively worn, I've heard that a set of cam bearings for a flathead ford V8 will work, but again this is what I've heard, not what I've seen/made work.

No but it might benefit from it. Thats not killer bad pressure - maybe bump your oil up a viscosity grade and buy some more time. Or if it's really bothering you - what Dell says - plastigage the bearings.

Whoops - typed before reading - 0 psi at idle, 5 psi at rpm is killer bad pressure. Time for the plastigage - maybe you'll be lucky and you botched the pumpthird party image

sounds like it's bearing time. only way to know for sure is tear down and mic the main and rod journals.

Rob..... ..Brian should have told you about the "eazy-way" to check bearing clearances with "Plasti-gage". Ask at a good autoparts house. Put string of plasti-gage across bearing journal and re-tighen bearing cap. The plasti-gage will "squish" and then you measure the width of the squish with the plasti-gage. Read instructions. Bearing wear limit = 0.005" gap. Simple, eh?

This beat having to "mike" bearing journals..... ..Dell
