after zippin thru some pds'from a few oil companies, i have come to the conclusion that there are a few companies who spend big bucks on fooling consumers thru advertising.
some of the oils have 1 or 2 things a leg up on other oils and vise versa.

regarding weights. could it be that an s.a.e. 30 would be ok in the summer then to switch to a 10w30 for the winter? that is a question i ponder.

hokie....what about your oil usage in your tractor...what do you use? i bet it is kendall 10w30. am i right?

i heard that rotella come out of my engine builders mouth as being good. anything with zinc.

i would assume that 10w30 would be good in the winter also then. so with that in mind..why not just go to synthetic 10w30. since one would never get enough hours on it in a year anyway...and if you change it in the spring then who cares about winter condensation. if it is changed every spring (10w30) synthetic...then the cost is justified. what do you all think?

I'm cheap and I think the advantages of a full synthetic in a 1941 flat head tractor and worn out truck (300K) are minimal at best. A fill of synthetic in the N is about $36 - not a budget buster by any means so if it gives you warm fuzzies by all means. I'd be interested in hearing what, if any, problems you have with oil leaks using a synthetic. On a fresh motor I wouldn't expect any but it's one of the boogie men you read about. If you go that route please report your experience - good, bad, or ugly.

Let your oil pressure be your guide - if a SAE 30 or 10W30 gets you good oil pressure use that grade. If not try the next heavier grade. I see no advantage to using a monograde rather than a multigrade in the summer. In a flat head motor the disadvantages are probably negligible.

My old truck and tractors get any decent conventional 10W30. The his-and-her 24V DOHC Caddy's and my 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe get whatever full synthetic 10W30 is on sale. They all carry 50+ psi at 3K rpm with that in their bellies. I'm pretty much brand neutral

The current HOT brand name is Shell Rotella. Folks seem to believe they have the best additive package going but IIRC it ain't catalytic converter friendly.

hokie, done some research on rotella:
viscosity at 100C: sae 30 is 10.9, 40 is 14.9 both have ash of 1.
15w40 viscosity at 100C: 15.7 and ash of 1.47
i don't like the ash content at all.
no listings for zinc on any rotella from their site.
rotella 10w30: viscosity of 10.9 at 100C and ash of 1.3
i don't think i like rotella too much.
all the rotella rimula grades are for diesel with heavy ash content. i won't go that route.

hokie, the front rope seal initially leaked on my new 8n motor when i got it back...he said it had to swell up. stopped leaking there now.
i just wonder if it would leak that sythetic out if i put it in.
oh, the rotella sythetic 10w30: viscosity at 100C is 12.1 and ash 1.4
the 10w40 sythetic is 13.5 viscosity at 100C and ash of 1.3

just think that the ash is way to high.
any thoughts?

Rotella is supposed to be loaded with ZDDP - i.e. high zinc content. It's primarily a diesel oil - check the API service category. Personally I don't worry about it at this level - I'm satisfied with most any quality oil as long as the viscosity matches the application.

i used sae 30 in my new tiller motor. still clean.
i just wonder why they don't post their zinc % in the table.

quite frankly...i'm not even sure why someone would go to a sythetic since the viscosity at 100C is pretty much the same as regular erl.

Because:
  1. It lasts a lot longer
  2. It has far fewer contaminants
  3. It has better lubricating properties
  4. It usually has a much higehr viscosity index
  5. ...

Viscosity is a very basic property - there's a LOT more to it than that. If viscosity was all that counted pancake syrup would be a good motor oil - but it ain't.
