Mowing with my 8N just now and shattered the pin that holds the ORC to the PTO shaft. Nothing else seems damages. This pin is held in place by the grease zerks on either side. The threaded opening measures .035, definitely too small for 3/8" pin.
Is there a standard size for the pins? Is it hardened?
Not sure if it's the same brand, but am going to pull the ORC from the NAA and see what kind of pin it has. Thanks for any information give.

The best of my recollection, this was the original pin that's about 20 years old. Doesn't seem to be any slop in the fit after I replaced the pin. I think I'll worry about this one aftet the next pin shears. third party image Thanks for the info.

5/16th x 2" long. Threaded part is for a plug to keep all the dirt & stuff out. Try to get a black steel roll pin, they're harder than the shiny (galvanized?) pins.the shiny ones sheer too easily (don't ask how I know). If you can only get the shiny ones, get a 5/16th and then one that'll fit inside that one to stiffen it up a bit.

Rspectfully, if your ORC pin is shearing, you have a real problem with worn shaft splines or something. That pin is only designed to hold the ORC on. The torque loads are taken by the splines.

"Standard" roll pin size is 5/16 X 2" long... they're cheap, carry spares...

Just to clarify... the pin is NOT "held in by the grease zerks".

It's a "spring tension pin" or "rollpin", and it's held in by an interferance fit between the pin and pinhole, the zerks (or zerk and plug) simply provide access to drive it in or out.

A loose fit between the ORC and the PTO splines will cause frequent pin breakage, as well as if the PTO driveline is twisted or otherwise damaged, so it can't telescope in and out freely as the driven implement moves in relation to the tractor.

ORC = OverRunning Clutch... Allows a "high inertia" implement such as a "rotary cutter" to spind down freely, without tring to keep the tractor moving, after you've depressed the clutch.
