1950 8N does the starter switch screw into the top plate or do you have to take the plate off to remove a backing nut under the plate? Thanks.

Does the 8n have an interlock system that you should be aware of when replacing the starter switch. I too am having to replace the starter switch on my 8n. Thanks in advance.

The 8N starter switch simply has a "rod" extending downward that's "blocked" by the shift mechanism below it, preventing the switch from being depressed, and operating the starter when the tranny's in gear.

Ford was YEARS ahead of some of the other manufacturers with this SAFETY feature, and it surprises me how many guys on here brag, form time to time, about "defeating" the safety feature by adding another type of starter switch, at another location.

There is a spring under the plate you need to be careful about jumping out.

I hate to have to tell you this , but , you have to remove the top cover to replace the switch . Just be careful when you lift the cover . Then be sure to get the forks lined up when reinstalling the cover . Always have the transmission in neutral when doing it . Other than that , its not a bad job .Good luck & God bless . Ken
