Why does my 8n like to run with the choke out?

My 8n surges and runs rough unless I have my choke out. This is even when running for quiet a while. Do I need to adjust the carb?

All other symptoms/causes considered, had similar problems years ago with water in the fuel tank, on my Jubilee.

Make sure the ignition is good first then check for air leaks around the carb metering system that are leaning your mixture. The likely culprits are the seals on the carb throttle shaft, the connect flange/gasket at the carb/manifold connect flange, and the connection of the inatke manifold to the cylinder hear. A cracked intake runner could also be the problem. Starter fluid CAREFULLY sprayed around these locations when the engine is running will indicate the leak by an increase in RPM.

As Dell says check spark first and if its a brite blue spark you may have a carb problem. One thing to trey is open up your main jet a 1/2 turn at a time to see if that helps. If that doesn't help then turn off your gas, remove the drain plug and then turn on your gas. Make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out of it for 5 minutes, catch your gas for safety and to keep from making a mess. If you don't have a good steady flow then check your 3 filters one or more may be clogged

Thanks for the replies. I do not think that its a vacumn leak as I know what that 'surge' is like. Dell, I do not know of other engine issues except a leaking exhaust gasket and I am pretty sure that won't cause this. But I did purchase a cap, rotor, points, and wires. I'll get plugs as well. I didn't know that the igntion switch could be a cause!

Thanks

Yep the stock ignition switches are a little on the weak side and do at times cause problem. I would say the best plugs to get would be a set of auto lite 437s by the way

offroadr..... ...keep yer money grubbers off'n them thar handy-dandy carb tweek'ems. Understand?

One of the founding members of this great N-Board used to claim 80% of all carb problems were ultimately found in the ignition system. Having to pull yer choke is almost always a sign of "weak-sparkies".

What else ya done to yer engine that you ain't telling us about??? Surging is usually a governor problem. Remove the carb? Leaky manifold gaskets, try spraying WD-40 to seal enny gasket leaks.

But iff'n I hadda guess, yer weak-sparkies are probably caused by yer weaksister ignition switch. $10 (cheap)..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Surging could indicate a vacuum leak, just a thought. What does everyone else think?

Quote from Dell:

Heres how I recommend adjusting the simple carb. Both Ford and Marvel/Schembler say to adjust BOTH the side-pointing idlemix and the down-pointing mainjet to 1-turn as a starting point. I set the down-pointing MAINJET to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVIT!!!

On a warmed up engine, I then adjust the side-pointing idlemix to maximum idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, maximum idle rpms. Understand? I then adjust the behind the carb throttle screw for a SLOOOooow 400-rpms idle. (ennythang under 500 is probably good) I do that song-n-dance at least 3-times before I"m satisfied. It should smoothly increase as you increase the throttle. A quick pull from 1/4-throttle to MAX should go fast without black smoke.

Remember, the side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS. out for lean, IN for enrich. My side-pointing idlemix is usually about 3/8-turn. Your carb is different than mine, so your final settings will be different but the proceedure is the same. Understand?..... ....Dell

You may also have a partially blocked fuel filter/screen too. Have you checked them yet?

Sounds like a carb adjustment may be needed. If you search the archives or look in the FO-4 shop manual, it will give you detailed instructions. Dell has written some good articles on carb adjustment in the forum. Click link below for his instructions. Remember this, the adjustment screw on the side is bassackwards, out is lean and in is rich. The big adjuster on the front is for RPMs. Hopefully Dell will post some tips since he is da' man when it comes to this stuff!
