I replaced my exhaust system with a unit from NAPA. It leaks around the header pipe to manifold connection. Just last night someone here was saying something about foil (aluminum?). Presumable as a gasket at the connection. I have been hoping it would collect some carbon and ...., "Tractor heal thy self".

You probably have the clamp on upside down; check out tip # 8, below:

Link

Do not try & hold the exhaust pipe against the manifold w/ your hand & tighten the clamp. Get out your floor jack & a block of wood; put the jack under the pipe to hold it tightly against the manifold, then tighten the clamp. (Don't get carried away w/ the jack or you will bend the pipe. Or, overtighten the clamp & snap it in two. BTDT)

If the exhaust pipe flange is bent, you will never get a good seal; check it out. Also, if the manifold is badly pitted, you will have problems; get out the JB weld. If that does not work, make a sleeve from a 6 inch piece of exhaust pipe w/ the same OD as the ID of the N manifold & exhaust pipe. Dimple the N exhaust pipe 3 inches from the top to keep the sleeve from sliding down into the pipe.

Tinfoil works, but only lasts about 6 months.

Bruce, thanks for the comprehensive reply. The situation is not so bad now after giving it a few taps. There is a removal of the manifold in the future, so I will not chase perfection now.

Eventually I will want to dress up the ol thang. After 15 years ownership, just got it charging for the first time last week with help from this forum.

Thanks again to all!

Let me try Dell's mind reading technique...

Are you talking about exhaust/intake manifold to block?

Did you not use gaskets?

Not manifold to block, but manifold to exhaust tube.

Muffler Clamp
- Flanged Muffler Clamp for 8N, 2N, 9N. (Part No: FP185) $4.32

Is your clamp good?

Take a ball peen hammer and "modify" your flange till it doesn't leak, either needs more taper, or less.

Dunk, the clamp is just not too good. The manifold is rusty also. Probably time for a new clamp. In the mean time I will give it a few taps with hammer and some tightneing.

Thanks to all who responded.
