I purchased my first tractor last year. No experience with them at all. Looking at having a working tractor for food plots and putzing around the land. Anyway, this tractor was working up until last week. A few minor lubrication leaks that I was going to deal with. But anyway, the guy where I have it stored had it hooked up and was running PTO to put hay in the barn. Working fine for two wagon loads, then just quit.

I bought a new switch as I understand that these are a common problem when overheated. But prior to that I tried to jump the ignition form one terminal on the switch to the other, but the starter would not respond. I have not take a multimeter to it yet, as I am unsure of where to go.

I have bought a new distributor cap, plugs, points and condenser and switch. Plan on replacing all this week. Is there anything I should be aware of or check prior or during? As I said, up to this point working fine, really only needed fluid replacements.

Thanks for the quick and hopefully simple fixes. I will take the advice here to the tractor and repost the results later in the week. Thanks again for sharing your expertise. Hopefully as I get into this a bit more, I too will be able to assist others.

Martell..... ..repeat after me the 6-volt tractor MANTRA: "keep'em clean and brite'n'tite".

First thing to do when engine won't turn over is to CLEAN the battery posts with metal brush scrubber and INSIDE the battery cable clamps. Now re-tighten yer battery clamps. Simple, eh?

2nd thing to do is LOOSEN yer starter motor 8"-bolts and pull starter out about 1/4"-gap. Wirebrush the gap between the endplate and the tranny housing. Re-tighten. Simple, eh?

3rd thing to is replace yer 5"-flatbraid sheetmetal ground strap with 11"-flatbraid ground strap ($10, cheap) bolted to castiron steering gearbox bolt.

That should gitt'chur starter motor to turn yer engine with a whizz-bang.

While there are other things that can stop yer starter motor from turning but these are most important and overlooked and need to be addressed. Iff'n you still have problems, repost..... .Dell

Is it a 6v or 12v, front or side distributor? The diagnostics are different, so make sure you tell us what it is. If it is a 9N, it will have a front distributor. Does the starter turn at all? If not, jump it & see what happens. Check out tip # 43 for the correct method of jumping it:

If the starter does not turn at all, you have a dead battery, bad cables or connections, or a dead starter.

It takes three things for an engine to run: spark at the right time, compression, & fuel in the right mixture. Lets start w/ spark. Remove a plug, or use an old one, ground it to the head, connect a plug wire, turn the key on & crank it. If you have a fat, bright blue spark, you are good to go. If you do not have spark, post back & you will get plenty of help. Next, lets consider fuel. Remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb, turn the fuel on & check for flow. As long as the gas is turned on at the sediment bowl, you should have a good flow of fuel. Next thing, get a can of starting fluid, remove the breather hose, turn the key on & crank the engine. After it turns over a few times, spray some fluid in the carb. Leave the choke alone! If it fires but won't start.... chances are it's carb cleaning time. Lastly, compression.....while that's not the likely problem....crank the engine & put your hand over the carb. If you feel good suction, that is a close enough compression check for the time being. Post back & you will get plenty of help!

Hold on!! Don't be replacing things that may work. Then you may be coming back with a bunch of problems instead of died and won't turn over. First thing is to get the tractor to turn over with the starter. Then you can tune it up one thing at a time. It may be something as simple as a bad battery connection, ground connection or broken wire. Has it been converted to key start rather than the original button switch ahead of the gear shift. Or is it old enough to have the rod that operates the starter switch and no solenoid? I could ask 6 volt or 12 volt - front mount or side mount, but right now that doesn't matter (yet)

The key on or off makes no difference as to the starter working or not. Shoot you can pull the key out and put it in you pocket and still turn the engine over with the starter button. Your problem is most likely bad battery or bad battery cables or connections
