ok boys, the idle air has very little affect on my 49 8n. with it warmed up...at idle like around 500 rpms...i turn the screw in to enrichen the sob and it only raises a few rpms. if its turned all the way in i get the most rpms but that doesn't sound right to me.

whats the thoughts here boys?

Arthur..... ...yer idling TOO-FAST, idle spec is a SLOOOooow 400rpms. Re-adjust yer behind the carb throttle screw for SLOOOer idle.

Always adjust yer side-pointing idlemix for fastest idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, fastest idle. Understand??? Yeah, its hard with outta tach (proofmeter) but try. You can also adjust for maximum engine manifold vacuum iff'n have a vacuum gauge. The OEM manifold had a "vacuum-port", new ones don't.

And yeah, side-pointing idlemix is usually about 1/4-turn for fastest idle..... ...Dell

dell, the castrol sae 30 oil gives me around 10 to 15 lbs of pressure at idle after the tractor is worked in the field some in 80F temperatures. that is why i have my idle set a little higher than a slow 400 rpms, it gives me a little more oil pressure(keep in mind this is a fresh rebuild). i was messin with the idle air to see if it would even give more rpm but it only gives a few, but a noticable few. i suppose the idle air at 3/8 turn out is good but i will put it at 1/4 turn out and leave it.

quite honestly, the castrol website has no pds information of 10w40 other than viscosity@100C= 14.2. thats it...nothing at 40C, pour point, ash, zinc or hths at 150C.
I know their sae 40 gives 14 at 100C and 3.7 at 150C. but that is about it.
comparing their sae 30 to sae 40 and 10w40...it seems the latter two (10w40&sae40) are superior to the sae 30 at 100C. what i care about is operating temperate viscosity, right?
now compare the castrol 10w40 or sae 40 to rotella 40 and they are about even, except i have no data for castrol's ash and zinc and 40C viscosity.
i am not sure at this point if rotella 15w40 is any better than castrol sae 40, 10w40 or rotella sae 40. this is all for summer use now.
any ideas?

Arthur..... ..donno why yer worrying about fixxin' low oilpressure in HOT WEATHER by uppin' yer engine idle rpms. Change yer 30wt engine oil to 40wt for HOT WEATHER. Even yer Ford Owners manual recommend that.

And simply put, enny multi-vis is essentially the LOW number as basic viscosity. 10-30wt oil is 10wt oil with viscosity modifiers. 15-40wt rotella is 15wt oil. Understand the concept???

As fer yer 'futtzin" with yer side-pointing idlemix. Much to the dismay of environmental bureaucrats, every engine carburetor's adjustment is DIFFERENT. Yours may be 3/8-turn, mine happened to be 1/4-turn last time but could be 1/8-turn the next time. Understand that concept???

ALWAYS adjust yer carb for MAX idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. MAX idle rpms, understand??? Then reset the behind the carb idle speed for SLOOOooow 400rpms. Do that idle adjust - idle speed adjust at least 3-times 'cuz it changes everytime you change idle speed. Understand?..... ..respectfully, Dell

so quite possibly the idle air could just be turned all the way in and left. what difference would that make? well, just burnin a lil richer at idle is all. correct?

ok...so the sae 40 would be a better choice over sae 30. fair enough.
so then the 15w40 theoretically should be thought of as this: its a 15 weight oil which gives start up oil pressure like a 15 weight oil but then when the oil is at operating temperature it then has the viscosity of a sae 40 oil at 100C, correct?

the advantage of the 15w40 lies in the fact of start up viscosity which is the quicker flow a 15w vs. the sae 40. am i on track?
