The lower lift arm studs on the 8n are almost wore down to nothing. I need to remove them and build them up or find some replacements. Are these things threaded into the rear end housing or pressed in? I would like to know before I got rough with it.
Thanks,
Rodney

They are tapered machined fit secured by a castleated nut with cotter on the inside. Access to both sides is by removing left side axle trumpet and the gear assembly (lifts right out). Replacements are available.

Rod, let me piggyback a related question on to yours; I have the same task ahead of me.

In removing the left axle trumpet, how do you contend with the left brake rod that comes through the housing?

The brake rod doesn't go through the housing- one end is nested in an indent and will come right out as you remove the wheel, brakes & trumpet

Thanks, fellas. I just found this board a couple of weeks ago, and being a neophyte mechanic I am blown away by the knowledge of the posters here and their willingness to share and their patience with us rookies.

Rod, I apologize for continuing to intrude on your post, but you might benefit as well. Question: When Rod and I get our axle shafts out, is there anything we should replace (seals, bearings, etc.) while we're there? I'm sure all the stuff in my assembly has been there since 1952.

Jer, just remember you do not remove the axle from the housing, you remove the axle and large housing together is the easiest. All you will need is the axle housing to center housing gaskt, usually good to soak the thin gskt in warm water so it will streach instead of breaking.

I found out what I needed to know. From what I read I can access both studs by removing just the left axle trumphet. That sounds good to me.
Thanks for all your help and comments.
Rodney

Left brake activator comes thru the clutch housing. No brake rods thru the axle area, the left activator shaft just turns in the axle housing as does the right side. Simply unhook the left linkage clevis from the activating lever.
