Recently got a 2N and my neighbor has a dearborn 2 bottom plow he is not using. Thought I would like to offer to buy it but don't know value. What should I offer and not offend? Thanks, Bobbie

Bobbie:

The value oa a Dearborn plow in an arms length transaction can be anywhere from scrap price to over $500, depending almost entirely upon condition.

The things to look for are coulters, joiners, tail wheel and, of course the condition of the shares and moldboards.

I would not buy one needing shares as these will set you back $120+ each. Moldboards are around $115 each.

That said, in my area you can probably find a serviceable one with coulters and tail wheel for $250-$300. Do not expect it to have joiners and do not expect it to be perfect at this price.

As you might expect, plows generally sell for less in the winter.

Bobbie, I bought a nice Ferguson two bottom a few weeks ago. Excellent shape. Still has a readible Ferguson tag attached. Coulters are missing but otherwise complete. I paid $295. Now I could have spent another couple of months looking around, spending all day at auctions etc, but I needed one "right now!" 'cause I had two acres I need to start plowing and discing. I found this one at the very first place I stopped. Twenty minutes after I left the house, we were loading it up in my pickup.

Two hours later, I was plowing for the first time in my life. Having a early 40's plow behind my 52 8n was worth something. I'm only going to need it for this one project then probably never again. I can sell it as is but I think I'll make it a winter restoration project. (Then I might NEVER sell it!)

Good luck on yours. I'd easily give up to $100.

Depends.

Buying froma friend / neighbor can be alot different than buying from a collector / dealer.

It's not uncommon to see 150-250$ for an old ford or dearborn plow in good condition. In fact.. I like my old dearborn 10-1 vs any of the plows i see at TSC. I paid 190 for mine.. needed minor work.. but is otherwise solid... I didn't think twice about the price.. even though it was close to the price of a new one.

How does the situation 'feel'? Is it in his way ? does he not use it? his wife complain about it? If so.. offer 50$. Is it something he used to use.. but hasn't been used in years.. but in ok condition? 100$ Any more than that and you need to base it on your needs or wants as you are starting to get in to some money.

Remember.. price can always go up.. if you say.. how much for the plow? 50 or ?? and he says he wanted a little more.. pull it out of him... what ya need out of it. 75? 100? etc.. If he really wants to sell it.. he has a price inmind and will tell you after you make an offer. If he don't want to sell it.. it may be expensive... ..

None of my tractors are for sale.. but if the right suitcase full of money showed up.. i'd be willing to make a deal if you get my drift..

last summer i purchased an economy dearborn. whoever had it sure didn't use it much. excellent condition. came with coulter/joiner wheels and tail wheel. i paid $250 for it and had it on the truck in 10 minutes. i hit a rock with it that almost stopped the tractor. front share is a lil turned down now.

i won't part with mine unless i get a tiller for the rear. paid $35 for a 7' quacker that was missing two tines. sometimes a deal and sometimes not.
