I have a problem My hydraulics are very very touchy when I try to set the level of my brush hog. Is this normal? Also after some time of operation the hydraulics will just drop for no reason. I will then lift the quadrant and the hydraulics will lift but as soon as I let go of the quadrant handle they drop all the way to the ground. Please Help.

Are you operating the lift in draft or position mode? Position which you should be using for a bush hog is with the little lever under the seat on the right side in the "UP" position so you can set the lift height in increments.

When the little lever is in the "DOWN" position you are in draft and the lift will raise all the way to the top when the touch control hanle is about an inch or so from the top of the quadrant and will drop all the way to the bottom when the touch control handle passes the lowering position where ever that happens to be. Usually a few inches from the top of the quadrant.

There is a round friction disc on the quadrant shaft that is supposed to cause you to have to use a small force to move the touch control handle. If it is still there and intact you may be able to tighten it enough to hold by tightening the nut on the end of the quadrant shaft.

If all else fails I make and sell a jig for adjusting the lift on the 8N along with a new cam follower dowel pin and an instruction booklet telling you how to adjust the lift.

Thanks, another question. I stopped by my local tractor shop today and asked them about the problem also. They recommended that I use 90wt gear oil in the hydraulics since the tractor is 60 years old. What do you think?
