question 1: How does the wix filter stack up to others for these 8n tractors?

question 2: on my 49 8n, i simply put the filter in the canister then a spring on top then the lid and finally the tube nut. is there suppose to be a spacer under the filter? is there suppose to be anything else? it is a bypass system so if the filter rests tightly to the bottom of the canister...is it actually stopping some oil flow and would that drop your oil pressure?

finally, is the oil passed thru the engine first and then to the oil filter and back to the pan or visa versa?

yep...always put the small rubber on it and if I remember right there is a larger flat o'ring type gasket under the lid about the same size as the lid.

does that little standoff have to be on with the legs down? does it matter? finally, if that were not in there...would it then not be an oil bypass system and what would that do to the oil pressure?

The entire system is designed as a bypass system. The oil that doesn't go thru the bearings is bypassed over tot he filter for filtering.

If ya had no filter in there or let it wabble around.. the oil would just pass thru the canister and not the filter and then dump to sump.

What are you hedging at? If ya got your oil filter installed wrong. instead of asking what it does.. just swap it around.. no biggie..

soundguy, i am not hedging around. LOL. Simply put I was wondering about the flow thru the filter, direction wise and if the standoff was missing wether it would make a difference or not. My system is correct, but I wanted to learn sumtin.
Does anyone know about what percent actually gets filtered? 30% maybe?

Arthur..... ...modern oilfilters are "full-flow", meaning everything outta the oilpump flows thru the filter BEFORE oil goes to enny bearing journals and valve rockers.

Your N-Oilfilter is a "by-pass" design and gets about 15% of oil pumped, ...ie... oil left over after all the bearing journals are juiced. It comes in OUTSIDE the filter and is pressured thru the filter and out the bottom drain to the governor cup and dumps onto the camshaft gear into the oilpan. Simple, eh?..... ..the oily Dell

ok, thanks dell.
how bout that 10w40 mobil sythetic. since the 15% filtration sucks, why not go synthy? why not keep that new engine as clean as possible?

Drop your oil pressure? Naaa.. it would raise it. Your oil filter is last in line to get oil.. ( well.. gov'ner is.. ) but that's why it ain't critical to fill your oil canister... bearings already get oil before the filter does.

Do pay attention to that small gasket betweent he lid and bolt.. otherwise it will seep some oil. i made mine from thick gasket paper.. though an oring or piece of tire innertube would work.. or heck.. even the rubber washer they give you with the filter kit from napa!! ( maybee wix too.. as wix makes for napa.. )
