Anyone ever try to replace the 18v battery on a Harbor Freight cordless drill with an 18v battery from sears? I have two of the drills which work well, except either the batteries or the chargers went south and I would like to replace them with a better one. I checked the voltage on the chargers and one was putting out 10v and the other 12v. I posted this question on the tools link, but I've had little response...Thanks...Ron

I have found out that ye can buy a new Sears/Craftsman drill/driver cheaper than ye can replace the batteries. I got one that I loved to use but the batteries quit taking a charge. Sears no longer stocked those 14.4 volt batteries. Would have had to special order them. Later caught a new drill/driver package deal fer $49.95+/-. Batteries won't interchange, even with same brands, especially Sears/Craftsman. Good Stuff but it goes obsolete.

Thanks for the post. And that's my problem. I have two great drills and I could get another drill + charger + battery for $20 at Harbor Freight or I can get another battery there for $10. But they are 80 mi away and anymore, you just gotta look closer to home. Sears is only 30 mi. I guess I'll just use my old reliable Craftsman with cord until I'm in the area of Harbor Freight and just buy another $10 battery that fits...

Yep. I had my first one about 3 years and it worked so well in the barn that last year, I bought one for the home. About a week ago, all three batteries went bad at the same time. I just don't trust the batteries or the chargers that much. I just figured that I could get a Sears Craftsman battery and charger for $20-30 if they would fit. Thanks for the post..Ron

Get em rebuilt by my guy at BatteryPackRebuilders.com. Upgrade to bigger lithium cells for a bigger kick. He does good work at good prices.

Thanks for the post. I checked and 'wow', I didn't realize that everyone who uses an 18 vdc battery apparently uses their own version. Milwaukee and Porter-Cable have several versions. I didn't find anything about these no-name Chinese batteries, tho. It probably would be cheaper just to go back to Harbor Freight and buy another battery than to try to rebuild these. Thanks again...Ron

How did you check them? Some of the 'smart' chargers need to be checked under load.. also.. they may not charge depending on battery condition.

When I checked a week ago, I just used an analog VOM with the test leads going to either side of the empty charger. I got 10vdc on one and 12 on the other. Today, I checked again and got 0 volts. I checked the ac at the recepticle and it was 120vac. I don't know of any other way to check to make sure the charger is working. Do you? thanks for the post and any further help..Ron

Open circuit readings are virtually worthless even on a 'dumb' charger.. and are useless on smart chargers.

Your average 'dumb' 12v car battery charger can show anything from 7vdc to 17vdc, depending on what fkind of rectification or regulation they have setup.. It's an electronics thing..

Same with a smart charger that looks for polarity swaps.. and battery condition before charging... they like to operate under a load.. and that's how you have to measure them.

It's quite possible the chargers are fine and it is the battery that is going south.. etc..

I'd put more faith in to a chinese charger,vs a set of chinese batteries..

If your chargers are only putting out 10 or 12 volts, how do you expect them to charge an 18 volt battery?

I just checked again and now I'm getting 0 volts. I just wanted to know if anyone had tried a Sears system on These Harbor Freight tools. The tools seem to be fine, but the chargers are really bad. I got really good use out of my first one and I bought another. They both went bad at the same time. Go figgure...Thanks for the response..Ron

I think that you will find that most of these batteries are keyed differently to avoid using the wrong charger on them, which could be dangerous. If it is the same voltage and the same type of battery (NiCd, NiMh, or Lithium) then you should be ok. Do not put the wrong type of battery in the wrong charger even if you can make it fit.

These are all NI-CD batteries and I guess I'll just take one of them and the charger to Sears and make sure that they are compatable...Thanks...Ron
