dell, why do you think that synthetic oil wouldn't make much difference with a flat head ford. what's the reasoning?

Considering they've lasted 50-60 years on 'farmer' type service.. and used old standard or reclaimed oil in many cases... what do you think they will benefit from new hi-tech oil?

The cheapest 84 cent a quart jiffy store oil is light years ahead of what they had in 1939.

You really want a 18$ a gallow 0w20 or 5w30 oil in these machines? They'd be lucky to have 20 psi oil pressure cold.. and any when hot..

Loose old low rpm, low compression engine.

If I rebuilt one brand new.. had new pump.. line bored.. and new cam bushings and everything buttoned up tight.. i might run some 10w30 dino break in oil. then switch to synthetic and keep her that way.. especially if top down restoration with new style gaskets and seals.. but surely not on an old girl..

Arthur..... ...I ain't gonna gitt into that fight. I have 'nuttin' agin' synthetic oil. It has an undeserved "reputation" for leaking or causing leaks. It is highly detergent and washes the gunk outta OLD seals. New seals notta problem.

Why do they call it synthetic? 'cuz its vegetable oil!!! plus "additives".

The acclaimed "desirables" about synthetic is LONG TIME between oil changes, like 25,000 miles. LOW viscosity (thin) for cold weather starting. Probably buncha other snakeoil claims.

Ford recommends changing oil every 100hrs or at least once a year, fall is preferred time. Why? so acid don't eat yer soft bearing metal over winter time. Acid is a natural "by-product" of combustion and condensed water vapors. (which is also a by-product of combustion) Oil change is way to gitt ridd of them nastys. Oil is cheap.

You wanna use expensive synthetic, go ahead. Just make certain yer synthetic oil viscosity's are right for your tractor operating environment..... ..Dell

soundguy, my engine is brand new. complete rebuild with 8 hours or so. i am researching for the next oil change. that is why i am checking synthetic.

mobile 10w40 synthetic has better 100C viscosity ratings than castrol sae 30. much better. that alone should give better pressure, "should" minus the easier flow of the oil.

since petro oils have so many impurities and these n tracts have bypass filter systems, which btw i still havent found the percentage thats bypassed, why not go that route?
