last year i bought my 49 8n. i changed the rearend/tranny fluid and put in a gl5 from fleet farm. now tonight i read on an old archive from another site thatin 1950 ford changed their lube recommendation for the rearend/tranny i believe to a gl3.
as if it isn't bad enough to find the proper rearend fluid, now they talk about different years require different types for these N tractors.

the ep may not be there with a gl1...is that true?
what should i do...i want the right stuff in there.
thanks

Here's the skinny. A gl3 would be a better lube than a gl1.. it's darn hard to find either in some places. TSC sells a 'ford' oil that is probably a gl3 oil.. many of us use it.

Now.. a gl4/5 oil. Thay are not automatically a problem. If your gl4/5 oil is formulated to be safe for yellow metals.. then you got no problems at all. Some gl4/gl5 oils are not completely safe for yellow metals.. IE some chemical reactions can occur that may eventually attack the yellow metals and cause them to corode. This isn't a short term problem.. it's a long term problem. IE.. your tractor won't blow up cuz you put the wrong gl5 oil in there.

Dif up your oil can and see if it is safe.. if it is.. don't loose sleep over it. If it ain't.. consider finding a yellow metal safe oil at your next service... plenty of them out there... And the chemical reaction i talk of is pretty slow... I doubt you would be able to detect any problems is such a short time frame... Also.. water entrainment may speed up that process.. so if your diffy has water in it.. not only is it generally bad for the pump and bearings and gears.. but it will help coroding compounds form faster.. etc.

Again.. if this is clean oil.. it's pretty much a point of minutia that gets kicked around here alot. Most people don't worry about it at all. I like to look at big picture/long term issues... IE.. in another 50-60 years will this hurt my machine,, etc.. and from a chemical etching point of view.. yes.. technically some damage can occur with an oil that is not yellow metal safe.
