9N resto questions - carb/aluminum hood/12 v conversion

I own a 9N I inherited from my grandfather. Lots of great childhood memories. It's in great shape but I want to restore it.

Questions:

The carb is gummed up and at least needs a rebuild. Should I just buy a replacement and if so which model / type?

I saw a photo of a beautifully restored 9N - it had an aluminum hood / grill that was polished up. Are these parts available from a retailer?

Is it worth it to upgrade to a 12v system?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I assume you may still have one of the most bullitproof units ever built the M/S TSX33.If you do,keep it with all the original brass parts which only need to be cleaned good. After disolving, rinse and blow out with air before it gets a chance to dry.If the float has a dimple worn in (by the float pin) by the needle you can fill that with solder and file till smooth.CENTAUR

Thanks! You are all so helpful - I really appreciate your expertise.

I'm going to rebuild the original carb, skip the 12v system as the 6v has always worked well.

Unless the carb is damaged.. or hopelessly coroded.. i'd always opt for a rebuild.. like an overnight dip in a pail of carb cleaner.. then a going thru with fine wire and compressed air and a spray can of cleaner.. and a rebuild kit.

A tsx 33 will be the correct carb.. however any of the 241 variants will work -just fine-.. heck.. even the zenith carb replacement will work fine, as well as the MS 241 look-alike repop sold at tractor supply.. etc.

I don't believe anyone is repopping the aluminum parts.. though you may be able to get a good home equity loan and buy some on ebay.. etc..

IMHO.. if it didn't come with luminum on it from OEM.. I wouldn't go looking for aluminum parts.. only the first few had it anyway.. etc.

12v conversion?

There is a good set of WHY/HOW articles posted at the n-news.com site penned by fellow list member Bruce, and myself.

It all boils down to what you want / need it for...

Rebuilt carb runs about 50 bucks, new carb about 200 bucks, your call. Cast iron carb is the proper choice if replacement is your choice.

No retail aluminum hoods AFAIK, maybe used, but very rare and expensive.

If your 6v system is working well, no.

Thanks Ramrod. No problems with the 6v system, other than it requiring a new battery.

I guess it's always a dilemma when restoring anything deciding between original parts vs. "upgrades".
