took a look at my old pistons from before the 8n was rebuilt this spring.
WITH RINGS STILL ON OLD FOMOCO PISTONS:
top compression ring gap= 0.030" secondary comp. ring gap= 0.012"
oil ring gap= 0.005

now these are the gaps between the top of the ring and the groove with the ring pushed in.

i wonder what the actual thickness of those rings should have been and how the top/bottom could have worn so much. any ideas?

There's 4 places for wear to occur, top and bottom of the rings and the top and bottom of the groove. ALL the wear to those 4 surfaces ads up!

A piston ring catalog, suc as "Sealed Power" will list the original width of the rings. For some thoughts on GROOVE wear, look at the site lonked below:
