Carb Issues (I think)

I have a 9N that I have been working on getting back into running condition. I have redone points, wires, cap, coil, wiring, etc. Tonights project was to clean the carb and try and get her running.

Well, I got her to fire up, but she will only idle. As soon as I increase the throttle, she wants to die out. Can someone tell be the basic settings on the carb adjustment screws? I don't think that is the entire problem, but probably part.

I think the main problem is fuel delivery - I don't have much gas in the tank and I am wondering if it just isn't getting enough fuel. I cracked the fuel line at the carb, and I get a steady drip, but I would think it would be more of a steady flow. Am I right to think it ought to come out pretty good?

Thanks for any tips and if anyone can tell me the general adjustments for the carb.

Thanks,

Dave

Before you remove the fuel valve assy from the tank, try opening the valve and then blowing some compressed air (go easy on this) into the fuel line, might loosen up whatever is clogging up the line. I had to do that to mine last weekend. The fuel started flowing good after I did that.

This is a gravity feed system. As such there are two primary limiting factors to gas flow; the amount in the tank and the diameter of the line.

A stream significantly smaller than the diameter of the line indicates blockage. It could be the screen in the tank or the one in the shut-off/sediment bowl assembly or the one in the elbow of the line is clogged, or the line itself is clogged.

What does the sediment bowl look like? Fine rust particals often mean larger particles elsewhere in the system. You can also look around inside the tank for visable rust; a flash light and a dentist's mirror can help here.

Yea, you have a fuel delivery problem. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb & turn the fuel on at the sediment bowl. You should get a good steady stream as long as the fuel is turned on. If not, the N has three fuel screens; one in the brass elbow, one in the top of the sediment bowl & one on the stem of the sediment bowl in the gas tank. All three probably need to be cleaned. If you have the fuel knob turned on all the way, it may be trying to feed off of the reserve inlet which is probably clogged. Put at least 2 gallons in the tank. Factory specs on carb settings are 1 turn out; I use one turn out on the idle but 1 1/2 turns on the main jet.

Thanks for the carb specs and thoughts. I'll make some adjustments and report back.
