Oops I tried to jump a 8N Ford tractor with front mount distributor with a 12 volt vehicle. It quit turning over and now does nothing. What should I do? What should I start looking at first for problems? Thanks.

Using the 12 volt battery connect to the battery then one cable to a good ground and touch the other to the starter terminal post. If the starter is OK it should turn the engine.

Be especially sure to have the tractor in neutral and it would even be wise to block the clutch pedal down. You don't want to get flattened by a rear wheel!

If it won't turn over this way you may have a problem with the starter.

If it makes a lot of sparks but doesn't turn you could have a locked up starter to ring gear.

Put it in high gear and try rocking it back and forth violently maybe with help to unhang the starter. If you can see the fan turn it is not locked up.

Be very careful jumping it if its 6 volts or you could end up in the hospital. NEVER hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery or it could blow up in your face. Also if you did do that you may have fried yor 6 volt battery and that in its self could have cause the problem you have now because if it shorted out the plate the 12 volt battery will not help any because its going to a dead short

You are a little short on information. Is it 6 volt? Did you jump to the battery or to the starter side of the solenoid?
Could be bad starter brushes if it does not throw a lot of sparks when you jump to the starter side of the solenoid. Lots of sparks may be stuch starter drive. Could be ground connection problems. Give us a little more info and we can give a little more help.

You are lucky that you can get on here and post that.

It is a wonder the battery didn't blow up on you.

NEVER hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery.

You can take the cables and hook one to the starter terminal bolt, and then the other to ground to jump it off, giving 12 volts only to the starter, polarity shouldn't matter for that.

Get an owner's manual. Read it cover to cover. It will help you avoid making future expensive mistakes.

Then, do a little reading out of the aritcles at left. When you start to understand 6 volt systems, you will be ready to start wrenching.

Finally, before you actually start unscrewing things, get a shop manual. It will help you through the procedures.

Or, you can keep plunging ahead, avoiding reading and learning like they are the plague, until you KNOW you've broken something, and then come on the internet looking for easy answers. Good luck with that.

Either way, we'll be here for you. Keep us posted.
