I'll be getting my grandfathers 8n in the near future (eventually I'll take it apart and restore all of it). Is it hard to find a backhoe that works with an 8n?

I also noticed someone had a John deere 7 backhoe, is that a common choice today?

I've been running one for 20+ years, Never broke anything on the tractor due to the extra weight, never had a problem. It does work better with the Sherman over/under, but works fine with the STD gears also.

See the link..
1950 8N loader/backhoe

That does look nice.

I'll have to look into it down the road once I get the tractor operating again.

The internal hydraulics on the "N" series has a low volume output. This means you are going to need an auxilery pump and tank. Now you use it and you create heat. So you need a cooler. I have a loader on my 8N and truthfully for small jobs I grab my JD 300 garden tractor with a Johnson loader on it. For little jobs it is much handier. Now it will only lift about 400 lbs. so when I need more omph and more reach I get the Ford and man handle the steering. It has lifted a Ford 390 V8 with a C6 transmission attached into the back of a pick up truck and acted like it could do more.

Yes it can be done, I have one on my 1950 8N. It works well but is very slow and its all the 8N wants to move and forget about backing up any hill useing the tranny because reverse is geared to high. My back hoe mounts to the front end loader frame and uses the same pump that the loader uses. Its a front mount type pump that runs off the crank shaft pulley. You can see a couple pictures of it in my web site. As far as being easy to find nope not all that easy and you don't want one that mounts to the 3 point since it really isn't strong enough to support a back hoe. A friend had one on his jubilee and broke the rear end houseing because of haveing it hooked up

What is the weak link in using a backhoe? Not enough power? Not a strong enough support?

Does the same thing apply to a front end loader?

Barely enough power, at least twice would be better.

Yep not really strong enough, a backhoe is a heavy, powerful, piece of machinery, an N tractor would most definitely need more weight on front for it (a FEL would probably work to an extent).

The same does apply to a FEL but not nearly as badly, many Ns have been run for many years with FELs, but they do usually end up causing front axle pivot pin problems, and make them VERY hard to steer.

You're right, Dunk, but in the body of his ad he says he also has a backhoe for an N.

Yes, it is possible to put a backhoe on an N tractor.

Old has one, as does someone else that built their own.

You would need to start with a PTO hydro pump, and reservoir.

N tractors are not very well suited for that purpose.

PS... in reply to Dunk, 07-01-2007 12:50:30
If I thought they were, somehow I would have one on 1949 8N *236763*.

I am in the market for a backhoe tractor, if I ever find what want, at the right price, but I will still have the N.

Check out the link below. Some fella has a backhoe that he says will fit an N series for 1500.00.

Might want to look again, he is saying he has a "backhoe" LOADER for sale for $500 for a TO-35.

It's the other ad he has. Type TO35 into the search engine. I thought the link I supplied took you directly to the one with the backhoe
