How do you time an 8N without a timing hole cover on flywheel housing??????

I just bought an 8N (Serial No. 8N I2286) which ran rough after a few hours. I am in the process of trying to tune it up. Got new wires, and tuneup kit just about installed but when I was setting up to reinstall distributor i discovered that my tractor does not have a timing hole on the flywheel housing. Given the serial number I have to guess that this is a really old machine so the operators manual and the service manual that I bought may not cover tractors this old. But I still need to complete the tuneup. Please tell me how to proceed.

Well, looks like you have the front mounted distributor. This distributor is setup when removed from the engine by using a straight edge on the drive tangs on the back. You need to get the IT F04 Manual. This procedure is almost impossible to describe with words. That is why you need the manual.
