I am working with a basket case 8N here. Already torn down when i got it. Some specs to note are, my block bores are 3.367/8?, depends on how steady i am. Old pistons are 3.268 dia measured across skirt perpendicular to pin. Old sleeves measure .047 at the very bottom of sleeve where I can still see crosshatch. I am have difficulty finding piston and sleeve combination kit. Any one have any suggestions? Thanks for the help by the way up front. Rick

When I went to the machinist with my block he didn't want to resleve it. The original job was slightly botched and he was afraid it was set in Lock Tite or JB Weld. He ended up boring the sleeves as situated in the block. I don't recall the final size or the sleve thickness, but it had to be more than 0.40. I seem to recall that the sleeves had shoulders at the top and one of the sleeves was set below the deck. If I find my paperwork.....

You need .090 sleeves , not sure were you came up wif a .047 sleeve. Do the math If the sleeve slips in they make .002 & .005 over. you do not split the # .040's are close to .040 sum .039 sum may B .042. TOH set me straight on this and its the way they finish the sleeve, the thickness kin vary as long as the I.D. izz consistent. You do not add .90 + .090 to figger the O.D. you are only adding .040 to a .040 sleeve to git a .090 witch would make a .090 sleeve .090 bigger outside bore than a .040, think of one side only and do not add both sides.

Dang Hobo - you're makin my head swim! Yes - stock pistons and .090 sleeves for 3.367 block bore computed as follows:

  1. Piston diameter is NOMINALLY 3.1875
  2. Thin wall sleeves are NOMINALLY .040 wall thickness which means NOMINAL block bore should be 3.1875+.080=3.2675
  3. Thick wall sleeves are NOMINALLY .090 wall thickness which means block bore should be 3.1875+.180=3.3675

Adjust those nominal numbers to get a final .001 interference final fit - machine shop work.

It would appear someone has installed some sort of overbore kit that increase the PISTON diameter(and engine displacement) by using a thinner sleeve and a larger piston in a block bored for stock .090 sleeves. The block bore is spot on - right?

He izz a blank check customer and I do look out fer'em better than I do price shoppes. I have to weed out customers and sum times if a estimate izz required I tell'em I really don't wanna werk on their trap. Bota has the parts priced so high their izz not much room fer mark up if enny. when ya git into this kin of trap you are better off let'n the customer buy the parts and make good labor, So either fix it or junk it. fer as warranty I have found Asian makes will go the extra mile to satisfi a customer over domestic makes ya never know till ya ask. I have a 96 Honda and they extended the warrant 14 years are 140K on the emissions (keep that a secret but I have the letter to prove it). Honda has been good to help out if I ask. I don't think the Asian market pays all the benefits to their employees the domestic market has to so they have the money to pay out if need B.

Yes Dunk,

That's exactly what I'm suggesting. Seems that kite wasn't out of reach after all ;-)

Sleeve thickness would be .045 for a .090 sleeve. The new pistons will be fitted to the sleeve.

That's news to me - .090 and .040 are the wall thicknesses AFAIK.

I am a novice on these tractors so bare with me. A .090 sleeve then ahs a wall thickness of .045? and a thin wall .040 sleeve will have a wall thickness of .020 then? Is that correct?

To Dunk and Old Okie. That kit is what I calculated I would need just with the numbers I ran. The guy I talked to said it was not, so hence the confusion on my part. This is my first tractor engine so I am moving cautiously. I really don"t want to order and bunch of stuff and then have to send it back for another try. I may go ahead and get that kit. I think it is what I am gonna need.

If the block bore measurement you provided is accurate it's dead on for stock .090 sleeves and pistons. That kit description is wacked however. It says it replaces the stock sleeves so it should work. The numbers in the description don't add up however. If the sleeves are .050 wall as stated the pistons should be .0800 over, not .0825. And it also says the sleeves are .0825 wall early on.... Makes you wonder what's going on. Personally I'd be inclined to stick with the stock .090 sleeves - I'm doubtful the performance gains from the overbore kit are worth the added expense.

That is the kinds info I need at this time. I will stay awat from the "Super" kit and run with something stockish with the .090 sleeves. My brother and I picked this thing up on the cheap side I think, and are gonna fix her and resell. I do want to do it right though, not out to gough anyone. On another question...any thoughts on the wrist pin bushings? Do they typically need to be changed on these 8N engines too? I may as well get a set if I order those pistons and such.

Off the top of my head wrist pin bushings are probably $1.50 a pop max? I'd certainly spend the $6.00. They are furnished undersize and have to be reamed to size after installation. I'd certainly do the bearings and oil pump while I'm in there as well - another $75 or so.
