Bad Battery? Or....

Today was the appointed day to start "Henry" for the first time this year. I charged the battery 3 weeks ago in preparation, and noticed that the charging meter didn"t start out as high as normal, and after 24 hours hadn"t changed.

Today I turned the Henry"s key and hit the starter button. Nothing - well, after punching the button numerous times, I could hear the starter solenoid click and buzz a little.

The battery now measures just about 4 volts. Do I have a bad cell?

TIA,

-Don

Probably. But a $5 hydrometer will tell you for sure.

Wal-mart should also have them if the parts store is closed. But yes it does sound like you have a bad battery. Guess the nice thing about haveing so many tractor is you can switch batteys from one to the other and see if doing that fixes the problem

Old, that's exactly why I refuse to convert my '66 Volkswagen Beetle to twelve volts, in spite of repeated urgings on the part of the man who's helping me with the restoration. Right now I can plop the battery out of the Beetle into the tractor or vice-versa and confirm or eliminate the battery as a problem.
