Ok, since my 49 is properly working in all aspects ... except ... you know that rattling i always had before the engine rebuild? well, i proceeded to take out the light harness wires. hmmm...that didn't stop the rattling(they were orginal and cut anyway). Now, I think i figure that it HAS to be inside the tank. it sounds like something inside is rattling when i drop the throttle down.
any ideas?

arthur, have you checked the gas line where it comes across to the 90* downward bend to the carb? There should be a anti-rattle piece of rubber on the fuel line under the fuel tank in the horizontal portion, but most of them have been lost or worn out. Just a quarter size piece of rubber that slips right on between the fuel line and the bottom of the tank to prevent rattles.

Take a light and look in the tank. You would not believe some of the things I have found in a gas tank. You may have a simple spout from an old gas can in there or maybe a screw driver or wrench etc.

well i checked it out. nothing in the section of the tank that i could see into. there is a baffle running front to back and another left to right so i could only see about 1/4 of it. i'll tell you, it drives me NuTtY!

Yep funny how a little noise like that will drive you crazy. Other things it could be is a loose bolt some place, a missing rubber piece under the tank or all sorts of other things. A rattle can be very hard to find at times. Now if your really worried about it take the tank off and empty the gas out then shake it. If its from the tank you should know by doing that but thats also a lot of work just for a rattle.

old, ok...upon further control of my rage...LOL...i found two bolts missing that hold the front of the tank to the support brackets. i am off to go get a couple and will let you know regarding the fix. i just can't stand the fact that my brothers 2n is quieter.

ok, one bolt was it on the front right. the left side i am not sure about. there is a hole there in the tank flange but nothing thru the bracket that i can tell. next time i take the hood off i'll check it. but for now it is livable. i checked the fuel line and in no way can it get close enough to the tank. ran up the throttle couple times and no movement on it so it should be good to go for now. thanks all.
