Resisters quesi

I did some checking yesterday. The "stock" resister on my set up is still there but was not being used. There was a white "plastic" thing which I assume is a resister. One side of it went to the key, the other straight to the coil. I measures the resistance of this and got a .8. I measured the resistance of the stock piece and it was also a .8. (Hard to tell exactly, the reading jumped around a little. The coil that was on it ironically read a .7.

I bought a new coil from tractor supply. It has a sticker on it that said: "12 volts, 2.5 ohms". I measured the ohms with my meter, it indicated 2.8.

Don Gilbert..... ..answered via email..... Dell

Common Ohm-meters do NOT READ low values of resistances with great degree of accuracy. (its a technical thing) You need $$$$ lab-grade ohm-meters or Wheatstone Bridge.

Yes, use the 12v 2.5-ohm coil with the dashboard mounted 0.8-ohm "infamous ballast resistor" and you'll be fine..... ..Dell, former calib-lab engr

Ok. I have one other quick question. I have noticed in the literature that you should use a "diode" in the alternater line. I could not find the exact diode but at Radio Shack found a rectifier diode 5404. It is rated at 3 amps and 400PIV. Will this work?

Stryped..... ..yes, the 1N-5404 will work well. Just mount it securely and well insulated. Stripe toward the alternator P1 connection..... ..Dell
