bent this share this spring. photo 2 shows the back ford oval and what looks like a B or 6 on the right side of it. this is off a dearborn economy plow.
i looked up on tsc and item 1014222 comes to mind but it is only $13 so i know that is not right.
any ideas on bending it back or gettin a new one?

Arthur...that looks like a disposable, or "razor" share, used on the later economy plows. I think the price you got from TSC is correct for that share. The earlier shares w/ a drawn point are the pricy ones.

Here's a pic of an earlier drawn-point share:

We bend ours quite often. Best way to straighten is to either press it straight or just use a BFH and beat it straight. Improper heating will take the temper out. BTW, ours are a 101 4 furrow and a 5 furrow semi-mount.

jim, do you use a grinding wheel to sharpen the leading edge? these shares are almost 1/8" thick and rounded.

Arthur - If you shares are down to 1/8" thick, their life is over. If you can't find replacements, then weld pieces of old truck springs along the edge for a "new" face and bevel them (not real sharp). Don't know about the availability those "economy" shares as all Dearborn plows sold in this area had the "Scotch Bottoms" (very difficult to find).

Arthur;
I'm not trying to be a smart a**, but, how many ways are you going to flog this dead horse.?

Two posts in as many days, about the same subject, getting very good answers from 6 diff. people, and you seem to want to agonize over it.

You are going to get old, before your time!!!

Take the info. people gave you, figure out which one you believe, then fix the plow share the way you want to, or..... . take it to someone who knows how. Then put it on the plow and be happy it's fixed.

Sorry, I just could not contain myself!!!third party image

I don't see a problem with your "bent" plowshare???

I used to heat them and bend them like that on purpose when our ground would get so hard the plow would not take the ground.

We even used to weld a two or three inch section of an old grader blade to the tip to reach out and make the plow take the ground.

zane, it is bent down about 1 3/8". it should be straight like the other one.
according to the original owners manual for the 8n, page 116 there are 3 types of material used for these plows. cast iron, forged steel and soft center. below (4) on page 116 it says "Forged steel shares should not be hardened." I know it isn't cast iron. So, i got a 50/50 shot at it being forged steel. Anyone know if I can heat it up and bend it back or just bend it back?

I had a blacksmith local to me work my plow shares, and he could work (it seemed to me) miracles. That was some years ago. Do you have a blacksmith in your neck of the woods?

no, there are no blacksmiths around here. that really sucks because i think that if a guy wanted to make some money that would be a good hobby for sure.
still, i am having a hard time searching for a replacement share.
