New PTO shaft leaking.

Just a few days ago, after I drained the old hyrdraulic/tranny fluid, I replaced my PTO shaft with a brand new one. I gave the hole a good cleaning and wife down before installing the new shaft. The new one appears to be leaking fluid. I've double checked the bolts and they are all very tight. Inside the PTO screw on safety cover it was spotless. The oil appears to be coming out of the seal or bottom bolt hole.
Is it likely that a new shaft would have a leaky seal?

I haven't even used the tractor with a PTO driven implement since I put on the new shaft, but I'm about to go bush hog my meadow.

Kenster:

I think this problem is related to your problem with shear pins. I think that your PTO shaft in combination with your new ORC is too long causing the shaft to bind up when you raise the lift. This is probably breaking the shear bolts and perhaps worse.

remove one bolt at a time, if it leaks out the hole you are someone else has installed 2 long a bolt and cracked the case, the holes are blind till one bust the case with a 2 long of a bolt, just my guess till you confirm zackly were the leak izz, I read its spotless b-hind the cover, seams its not the seal 2-me

It sounds to me like your 4 bolt cover gasket is leaking if the pto cover was spotless inside.Did you seal the gasket? was the dif housing flange clean and smooth?

Thanks Bob, but if it continues to leak, I'm not going to tear it down. I'm going to send it back. I just paid over $100 for this and it shouldn't leak.

Kenster..... like Hobo said....it's probablly one or more BOLTS leaking. If the seal was leaking, you should see oil in the cap.The four bolt holes that holds the pto shaft in place are supposed to be blind holes. If one uses too long of bolts,it will break thru the housing and cause the bolts to leak, not the seal.If that is your case, just add a little RTV to the bolt threads and it should stop. don b

PTO shaft leak: How far do I go with repairing a leaking PTO shaft? gasket, sleeve, seal, bearing and ring? Or just replace the seal?
I want to do it right, but not do anything not needed. Any suggestions.
Thanks,
Counselor Ron

That's what I meant, tear it down and get it replaced, if it doesn't quit leaking after it is run a little.

I just went through about the samething, with a transfer case seal on a pickup.

I OH'd the xfer case, installing a new seal and peedi-Sleve on the front output yoke, and then the truck sat for a couple of months waiting on the engine. There was a good puddle of oil under it. I darned near pulled it back apart, but decided to refill the oil, and drive it a bit with the xfer case in 4X4. Things must have polished up, because it hasn't leaked a drop since. Maybe you'll get lucky, too.

I don't know why you put the wife down before installing the new shaft???

If it is leaking past the seal, I would give it a little operating time for the seal to polish up the new shaft before tearing it down.
