I guess I should have not wrote this in another thread getting It of topic and apologise for doing it.third party image So I'll start this as another topic.

Ok here goes....
I heard on the forum here that you should start out in the gear that you want to use and not shift when you get going like I do when I bush hog
(BTW I have a '48 4-speed 8N)
What I have been doing is shifting from first then into second.

Why are you not supposed to shift from first to second when in motion? I have been doing this until I saw y'all said not to do it.
When I do it I do not grind any gears and it usually goes right in with no problems at all. But then being an old school truck driver, heck I'm used to not even using a clutch when I shifted anyhow. ( I do use the clutch on the tractor)
But again the question remains...Why can I not shift on the fly and what damage will it do?
Thanks,
Smokey in E. Texas

Hey, Briar Creek. Take a breath and consider the possibility that Jack may have been trying to make a little joke. His comment did not strike me as being rude at all. Now, unclench, and enjoy the board!

Cheers!

Hi Kenster Heck that's the way I took it too. Matter of fact it had me laughing a bit too. That's why I was so surprised at the response and though I may have said something wrong or inappropriate.

Hey Briar Creek, hey my friend go grab a cold one (heck if you were around I'd buy) and have a seat in your favorite recliner.third party image These guys are a really good knowledgeable bunch and have helped my quite a bit here in the last few months since got my 8N and joined the board.third party image

quote="lonestarjeff"](quoted from post at 21:17:47 07/10/07) Smokey...where in E. Tx are you? Maybe I'll come visit. :-)

By the way, what is a 4 times 4 transmission?

Jeff[/quote]

Jeff, be glad to meet you. Come on over anytime I'm usually around almost all the time. I live in Wills Point (hwy 80) which is just south of lake Tawakoni and north of Canton Texas on hi way 64 and west of Meneola.

A four X four tranny you have to shift though four gears then shift another shifter than though another four then shift the shifter again and go though another four until you go through all sixteen gears. What's tough is your shifting two shifters at the same time when going through one set of four to the next set. .....Kinda hard to explain here. I had learned when I was a kid in the old the Diamond Reo and the Auto-Car. The were both in concrete mixers.

Obviously you need a lesson in double clutching. Double clutching is not the use of two clutches. Double clutching is as follows.

You push the clutch in..and take the tranny out of gear.

Push the clutch in again, and then put it in gear.

Hence....double clutching

Before being so rude, it might be a good idea to know what you're talking about

Rude??? Where in the heck did that come from? I have never been rude on this board and everyone has been very nice to me also. So I'm sorry I don't get it.

Smokey:

I've been shifting my Fords including the Shermans on the go for over 40 years with no ill affects.

It is much easier to do on the constant mesh Fords than on the sliding gear Massey Fergusons but even those can be shifted on the go with practice.

You are getting good answers... most of the nay sayers likely harken from the school of: "IF I CAN'T DO IT, YOU CAN'T DO IT EITHER"

I have always shifted when I needed to, and that includes the Sherman OD.

Some fellers can wreck a crowbar, others get by a long, long time. Just do what works for you and don't get caught up trying to be PC.... Majority DOESN'T rule.

Smokie..... .yeah, oldtime double-clutching truckers are skilled and sensitive enuff to semi-NOT-GRIND the constant mesh N-Tranny gears. Its the GOVERNOR that prevents good double-clutching, yet it is the governor that allows you to start out in whatever gear. Even the N-Ford OWNERS manual recommends starting out in appropriate gear and NOT shifting on the fly..... ...Dell, the DCMF

"Why can I not shift on the fly and what damage will it do?"

I have been guilty of shifting "on the fly" for many years! Of course, I don' grind the gears, haveing driven many miles in a 18-wheeler with a Road-ranger UNSYNCRONIZED transmission! And I have had absolutely NO damage to the gears! There are occasionally times when the tractor will tow a larger load if one starts rolling in a lower gear & then shifts to a higher one after obtaining momentum. Syncro-trannies just were made for WIMMIN to drive vehicles! Real Men don' need it!! CC

Smokey, If you can catch the gear without grinding there is no problem. I sometimes go from 2nd to 4th on the fly. A gentle hand, practice and understanding, many things are possible, but not recommended.
