I have a 1947 8n tractor that we are having trouble keeping it running. It backfired while mowing and then it wouldnt start we changed plugs, point and condenser and we have even changed the carb. It will run for about 5min. very badly then shuts off and doesnt start up again.WE have blue spark at the plugs. and have changed the fuel filter and then took it off completely to see if that would help but it didnt.
Any ideas where to go from here?

Like Bruce said a 5 min. run time usually is the fuel flow causing the problem. Nest time it stops on you have a wrench and something to catch fuel in and reemove the plug on the bottom of the carburetor and see if you are getting a good steady flow of fuel. If not clean your screens.

Changed the fuel filter? N's didn't have fuel filters. They have 3 fuel screens & chances are one or more of them are clogged. If you have an in-line fuel filter on it, I'd just take it off & leave it off. It is not needed & because the tractor has a gravity fuel system (an Isaac Newton fuel pump) an in-line filter actually will restrict fuel flow. As a good rule of thumb, a 1 - 2 minute run times is usually the condenser, ballast resistor, or vacuum lock....or, failure to turn the gas on. A 5 minute run time is usually fuel screens. A 15 minute run time is usually the ignition switch. A one hour run time & then restarts after it cools down is usually the coil. You have the classic clogged fuel screen symptoms. To confirm, remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb & turn the fuel on at the sediment bowl. You should get a good steady stream as long as the fuel is turned on. If not, the N has three fuel screens; one in the brass elbow, one in the top of the sediment bowl & one on the stem of the sediment bowl in the gas tank. All three probably need to be cleaned. If you have the fuel knob turned on all the way, it may be trying to feed off of the reserve inlet which is probably clogged. Put at least 2 gallons in the tank. And only turn the knob 2 full turns.
