clutch confusing me

Well, the clutch is out. Split the tractor and I must say for not having done this before the owners manual nailed the process down pretty easily. Its an 8n by the way with a 2n engine. 1949. Here are the points that confuse me.

1. The FO4 book shows two parts to the clutch disk. Is it actually one piece riveted together. I don't see the face plate unless its part of the clutch disk?

2. What holds that disk centered on the hole to match the spline. It dosen't lock into the flywheel anywhere that I can see. Is it held on by the force of the bolts from the pressure plate?

3. The book says to mark the position of pressure plate to flywheel. I read this after removal. If it only goes on with the six bolts why would it make a difference?

4. I've been reading about using wedges and C-clamps for installation. what has to be compressed, I can't just bolt on the pressure plate?

5. should I buy a clutch and pressure plate? The plate has some very minor scoring, but almost smooth if you run your finger across it. There is some minor pitting however.

Finally, can someone outline the step by step process of installing the clutch disk and putting the beast back together.

Most clutch kits come with a plastic splined tool for alignment of the clutch. I helped put a clutch kit in my Dad's 2N two weeks ago and now mine is split and will be going back together this weekend. All you do is slip the alignment tool through the pressure plate assembly and the clutch and with thois sandwiched together install the assembly with the six bolts. And yes the pressure from the pressure plate keeps the clutch aligned and in place. Do not overtighten the 6 bolts that hold the pressure plate(13-15 ft. lbs)..Flywheel bolts 40 ft. lbs. Transmission input shaft bolts 23 ft. lbs. Transmission mounting bolts(at the split) 53-60 ft. lbs. HTH

Flywheel bolts need to be tightened to 75-85 ft. lbs.

Do as you wish. You need to torque those flywheel bolts down much more han 40 #.

FYI...page 13 of the FO 4 (small book))

Rattzie..... ..congratts on yer successfull splitt; see 'nuttin' to be afraid of, was itt?

Pay attention to your clutch splined hub. It is NOT symmetrical but "off-sett". Long side to tranny. Understand?

Now you need to "center the clutch". Use the tranny input shaft. 4-bolts and its out. And replace the tranny input seal $3 (cheap) at the same time.

I always "de-polish" the clutch rubbing surfaces of both the flywheel and the pressure plate with coarse sandpaper. Don't mucka'round worrying about worn-in grooves and scratches, leave'em. Tractor clutch engagement is so coarse, it don't matter.

While it is always a good thing to "mark" mating parts with punch-pricks so you can re-install them "balanced"; don't worry about it.

Install yer clutch pressure plate with the "shouldered" 5/16" bolts, torqued to 18ft/lbs.

NO WEDGIES needed. Generally the pressure plate doesn't need replacing, but "inspect the 3-fingers for "wear"; that'll tell you iff'n needs replaced.

Also "inspect" yer flywheel starter teeth for wear. NO SHARP EDGES, ok?..... ....HTH, Dell

I don't think I am able to answer all that tonight correctly...

Clutch parts that you need to be interested in changing while it is apart (so that it out lives you).

Flywheel: Needs surfacing most of the time by a machine shop, also needs ring gear replaced (cheap).

Clutch plate (cheap).

Throw out bearing (cheap)

Front tranny seal (cheap)

Pilot bearing (cheap) front part of tranny shaft is centered by pilot bearing. While you are replacing the front tranny seal, use the tranny shaft to center the clutch plate.

Then the pressure plate, could be still good, I replaced mine anyway, I think it is still good (not so cheap)

Well I tried, and yes, thank goodness I am off my rocker.

I'll try to do better in the AM.

You can bolt the pressure plate on without any compression, but you will need an alignment tool to line up the new clutch disk so it will mate up to the trans input shaft splines. This is a must while installing new clutch. Book says to compress the pressure plate for removal, but it's not necessary to compress it to install.
