When I convert my tractor over to 12 volt will I need to use/replace the voltage regulater (the little cube under the hood)?
Thank you, Ben.

AS you can probably tell I am VERY new to all of this.

Well thanks for all the comments I read the article that was posted from n-news, that makes a lot more sense know, the only reason I was going to convert it to 12 volt is because I wasn"t sure whether I could find a 6 volt battery and like the article said, I wil need to replace alot of the wiring, but I guess that all makes sence, It is going to stay 6 volt. Thank you.

You're welcome. As far as finding a 6v battery, most chain auto stores, as well as Wally-World, carry them. So do tractor dealerships; those batteries tend to be a lot more robust (better construction) than the auto batteries. However, I've had the same 6v car battery in my 1951 N since April 2000.

I don't know your reason for planning to convert to 12V but I own and use both 12V tractors and 6V ones just because that's the way they were when I got them. I find the 6V machines as dependable and easy to start as the 12V ones. If your engine has low compression converting will spin it faster and get you out of a rebuild for a while though.
Good Luck, Lee

Can I throw this out about 12 v conversions? Found a 2N for sale that has been converted and the owner says he also made it a negative ground too. Seems that that would turn the starter backwards unless some internal polarity changes were made in the starter. Any ideas? thks

These starters are series wound DC motors, and will operate in the same direction no mattter WHICH battery polarity is used.

Since the polarity applied to BOTH the armature AND field is reversed, rotation stays the same.

Some "lawn and garden" stuff and certain newer vehicle starters have "permanent magnet fields" and WILL reverse if the polarity of the current applied to them is reversed.

This probably is not the right way to do this but I am not much of a computer person. Thanks Bob for the reply. If I understand you correctly then no matter which terminal is grounded the starter will only spin in the proper direction. Tha about right? thks again

Before you make the decision to convert it to 12v, you might want to read these two articles in the N-Newsletter:

Link

The first by yours truly addresses the reasons & excuses for converting to 12v & the second by fellow board member Chris Britton, aka SouNdguy, will tell you how to do it correctly.

If you convert it w/ an alternator, you will not need the v/r. If you use a 12v generator, you will.

To make it a little more plain, the typical alternators used for conversions are 10SI Delcos, and have an INTERNAL voltage regulator. The tractor's existing regulator can be removed and the lead from the alternator and the lead to the ammeter/junction block spliced together.

If you are going to a 12-Volt GENERATOR system, the regulator will need to be updated to a 12-Volt unit.
