Lift Arm Question

The swivel balls in the lift arms of my 641 are worn so bad that they pop out. Not sure what they are called, but he things in the ends of the lift arms that are continually turned the wrong way when you go to hook up a piece of equipment

I looked for the correct name in the parts manual but could not find a listing for them. Looks like you have to buy a complete lift arm???

Is there a fix for this problem?

Like most questions, there are a couple answers. First: yup, you can buy whole new arms. Second, you can find replacement ends that can be welded on. Third, if you weld, you can cut 1/4 or 5/16 out of the strap that goes around the ball end. Hammer it closed so it gets a shorter grip around the ball and weld the ends together again.

The third approach worked very well for me. And cost very little, too.

I think I will cut some out of the ends, hammer them down and have them welded back together so that I may keep the original lift arms. Where would be the best place to cut the lift arm ends? Top, bottom or rear? Since the most force is applied to the middle of the ends as equipment is pulled and on the bottom as implements are lifted where would be the best place to make the cut? I understand that a weld should be stronger than the original metal it joins, but as my luck goes I would like to get the cut in the best possible place.

For me, it worked fine to cut it right in the middle, then form the ends somewhat equally...

Dad bought the tractor new in '46, if it goes another 20 years, I'll be dead or beyond particular caring... :-)

I like the cut the strap and weld it option. I can not weld worth a crap, but I can get the welding done. What did you use to cut the section out of the strap with? A gringer?

I have a wonderful functioning 8N, however, recently the original right side lift arm sheared in two. I ordered another one but we're having an awful time getting the broken one off! We've used plenty of Liquid Wrench but cannot even budge the old arm. We've been whacking it with a sledge hammer to no avail. Any suggestions?

We also need suggestions on how to find a decent serviceman for our 8N in our area: Azle, Texas.

Even easier.. dig around your bolt bin and find 2 big honkin washers.. like with 1" ID's..pound them to have a concave contour on the id area.. then weld them over the loose end of the ball.

I've welded washers like this on a few and kept them in service for years.

Gotta have big washers.. the bigger the better..

Duey is correct about the 3 options. I had a lift arm end that apparently someone drove over pavement, dragging the lift arm because the socket end was worn nearly through to the ball and had a crack that just looked like it would choose to break at just the wrong moment. I looked into all 3 options for a fix. New lift arm - NOT CHEAP. Replacement ends - cheap, but if you can't weld and have to actually PAY someone to do it, then almost as expensive as option 1. Best option is find a friend who welds and bring over a six pack as payment - CHEAP!
I had a welding place weld the end back up and then they ground it smooth enough for the ball to rotate inside. I wanted to keep the original lift arm, but actually if I'd bought a whole new one it would have ended up cheaper. So choose your poison! LOL
