Hello all. Im trying to figure out what year my tractor is. Reading the forum has gave me a few clues. My dash is a one piece cast iron, battery holder and all. The grease zerks face the front on the spindles. It has the key and starter button in the dash, but also the saftey neutral starter button in the transmission cover? The side cover does have a dipstick. 3 speed with a Sherman setup. A 3 spoke steering wheel. Still running 6 volt. I rebuilt the Marvel carb, put in a new set of plugs, cleaned out the sediment bowl, changed the Tranny fuild and its just purr's, no smoke, 3 point works well. The serial numbers are rusted beyond seeing anything, and im sure things have been interchanged thru the years, but im thinking it's about 1940 or so. Next is what is my seat? It has two big adjustable springs, with a shock absorber mounted between them, a flip up pan, and a crank to adjust the ride??? Thanks for any help!

If indeed you do have a cast iron dash you have a very rare tractor. I have not heard or read of any Ns ever having such but if it attracts a magnet it definately isn't aluminum.

The pipe at the right front of the lift cover is where someone has done a home made attempt at using the lift for remote hydraulics such as a loader or an implement with a hydraulic cylinder etc.

I notice that it still has the original two piece bolted together top link. Very rare also and very aggravating to try to adjust. Don't ever throw it away though when you give in and get one of the later screw type top links.

That tractor would make a fine show piece. It has all it takes. Especially if it has the cast iron dash!!!!

My 41 has a cast iron 1 piece dash and the zerks are on the rear of the spindles.

Can't halp you with the seat.. I've seen the monroe type with a shock.. and I've seen the ones with the rubber pieces on the back.. but not that type.
I'm more interested in that bit o' plumbing on the lift cover. if ya got more pics post em'...we love to see custom stuff!

My first reaction was the same but on closer examination it looks like it's just a pipe coming up from the test port.

Your dash is cast aluminum and that fact alone states 1939 or early 1940. The best method of dating would be serial numbers and Smiths web site, someone will come along and send you in that direction I am sure. Congrats on you 9n.

Yes i also thought it was a aluminum dash, but if you look in the picture it's rusting, and it likes a magnet. here's my spindle with the front pointing zerk. someone long ago put a weld on the steering arm, a farm fix that i must fix, LOL

It likes a magnet huh? How about some more pictures and a serial number off the engine block right by the starter. I would like to see the grill and hood, and a straight look through the steering wheel at the dash including the tranny cover.

Does the tranny cover also like a magnet?

I also notice the dipstick at your right heal, this would reduce the 39 or early 40 date possibility as the ones with aluminum dash and tranny covers had the dipstick in the tranny cover and a plain round slightly domed cover at the right heal (also aluminum)... not to say that many a N have been cobbled together from anything that fits!
Serial number an more pictures
