A tree was toppled by a recent windstorm. After cleaning off the branches, I hooked up the trunk to my box blade (you guys scared me to death about all of the roll-over risks involved) and hauled it about a quarter mile down my driveway.

I then positioned it as a gravel retainer on my RV pad. This may not seem like much of an adventure to you guys, but for someone unused to heavy machinery, this was amazing. I love my little work horse!!third party image

I can't help but think about my Daddy telling me about his Daddy's 9N years ago. They had dual tires on each side and used it to pull pine logs out of the woods to cut up for barn and hog pen lumber. They pulled straight off the draw bar with logs big enough that they only cleared the ground six to twelve inches and heavy enough that you used the brakes to steer because the front end was so light!! I did the same thing at times when I cut firewood for years. As the man said in the "Dirty Harry" movie, Ya gotta know your limitations! Keeping that in mind I never once had trouble other than getting a log/tree too heavy and having to shorten it a few feet. Stay safe and be happy that we can all agree to disagree as we see fit! By the way, my tractor is the same one they used starting in December of 1939!

Ray - now that's a hunk - not sure I'd want to go up much of a grade with that hanging on the boom pole.

Bill,

You're right, the front end gets light. Notice the wheel weights - but when I moved that beast, I had to back up my steep driveway. That's from a 70 year old oak that blew down in a big storm last year. It was growing down in a gulch that was full of large boulders - so it eventually got too big for the roots to support. Loads of firewood out of that puppy. I've got 30 more feet of trunk to move. That 8N will only lift about six feet of trunk at a time. If I cut 'em any longer than that, I'll be steerin' with the brakes!

Ray

No kidding. The trunk was about 30' long and really heavy -- at least I couldn't even roll it by hand. Until I got my 30hp work horse, I'd have had to chop it into small bits and clear it one piece at a time by hand. The luxury of having the ability to lift and pull is pretty wonderful if you're not used to it. I feel like a bionic man! (When I first got my boom pole, I was in heaven. I was hunting down things to lift -- nothing not nailed down was safe.)

There is nothing like working your N tractor! The sound of that four cylinder under load is music to my ears!
Now if you've seen some of the things that I and many other N owners have done it would make you cringe! ( Like rolling a big tree by tugging on it with a chain whilst making sure the front wheels stay on the ground and not getting whacked in the head by a branch coming over the top! Not the smartest accomplishment of my life! But it worked!)
If your not sure err on the side of safety so you can see another day to operate your tractor!

Good job...and a "beautiful N". Swell pictures.

I believe if you always think first about what "could" happen, then prepare (as you did), you can do most anything with these great tractors.
