I need some help figuring out a problem with my tractor. This is the first time the tractor has seen heavy use since I had it rebuilt last year. I jumped on it yesterday and it started up easy on the 1st try. I ran the bush hog for about 2 hours. I got off to get a drink of water and tried to start it back up (about 5 minutes after I shut it off.)
Before I tell you my problem, here are some details:

1. Early model 8N with front mount distributer

2. 6volt

3. Engine rebuild last year

4. Points and condensor replaced

5. The coil was not replaced when tractor was rebuilt

6. New wiring harness

When I tried to start it back up the following happened:

1. It turned over real slow almost like a weak battery.

2. The engine would turn over 1 time and the starter would disengage and make the spinning sound. This happened about 7-8 times

3. The engine finally turned over real slow about 7-8 times in and row without the starter disengaging and it started.
I do not think it is the battery especially since it started so good when it was cold. I assume it is something electrical or the starter is dragging when the engine gets hot. I have used the tractor 5 or 6 times since the rebuild and it has started fine after running each time, but It has been during cooler weather.

What are the main things I should be looking at to find out what is wrong.

Thanks in advance for your help. This has been a very informative forum.

If Ross Pugh's suggestion doesn't help, I'd have the coil checked. I once had this same problem on my 2N and replacing the coil remedied it.

Remove your battery cablesat both ends and use a wire brush to make the connections cleaan and bright and put 'em back on good 'n tight. Also clean and tighten the connection at the starter. It sounds like you got a corroded connection somewhere. Post back with the results. Good luck.
