Bushog question

I have about a 300 year old bushog. Needless to say they don"t build a PTO shield/cover for it. When I"m mowing the tall grass gets wrapped around the shaft. Yesterday it heated up to the point it almost caught fire. Since I can"t put a shield on I was thinking about getting a 2X4 and attaching a chain to both ends and dragging it under the tractor"s rear axle. It should knock the grass over just enough to keep it off the shaft. Was wondering if anyone else had tried this or do you think I"ll work?

I have never had that problem however I have a friend who has a brush hog that was constantly having problems behind his Allis C. He took a piece of PVC I think 3" then put an adapter coupling on each end taking it to 4" to go over the universals. Now if the grass starts to get caught the pipe just stops and the shaft keeps going. Worked and was cheap enough I suppose, not much different than the metal one that came with my 501 sickle bar other than the material.

I don't know where you are, but in "ag country" just about ANY welding or machine shop can put together a new, shielded driveline for you.

NO wrapping, and safer for YOU, too. TSC even sells the components, but they have to be assembled and welded together.

Dad used to capture a piece of tin under a couple bolts near the PTO shaft and extend it back to keep the long stuff from engaging and getting wound up... once the first one gets caught, the rest follow like lemmings!

I'd think even a piece of thin wall drain pipe with a light weight chain to keep it from rotating would also be a benefit... but that won't cover up the knuckles or universal joint..

I'm thinking a 2 X 4 won't be wide enough... 8 inches is more like it.. Just don't get yourself caught up in it..

I slipped a couple of feet of 4" PVC over my drive shaft (to mimic a PTO shield) and three years later it still does the job perfectly.
