O.T. - I wanna buy a welder

I'm in the market for a stick welder for occasional welding of 3/16" to 3/8" steel. I don't want to break the bank because I don't anticipate using it too much. Just playin' with attachments for my N, but haven't welded in over 20 years.

I found a Hobart 205 amp for $240.00 at the local Fleet-Farm. Will that work for what I need? Are there any good models available at Harbor Freight? Any suggestions are appreciated!

I've got a Lincoln 220 buzz box, a Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC crank-adjuster, and a Hobart Handler 187 wire-feed. The latter is on sale this week at TSC (mfr suggested $820) regularly priced at $679...for only $479. It is ready-to-weld straight out of the box.
Avoid those cheap chinese machines.

If it where me I would look very hard at the good old lincoln buzz box welder. There hard to beat and if you watch you can some times find good used ones for around $100-150. Plus as long as they still work they will sell for that price all day long. Some of the other brands loose value after they are a few years old. I could have got a hobart pipe liner a few years ago for around $300 and it was portable and had a plug set up for running tools off of it.

Old's right - you just can't beat a Lincoln 220 "bux box". In a weak moment a couple of years ago, I traded mine for some other stuff and regretted it ever since. Earlier this year, I got a 10% off coupon in the mail from Home Depot and used it to buy me another Lincoln 220. :-) GA Jim

 Choices Re: O.T. - I wanna buy a welder in reply to 5NSlezWI, 07-17-2007 13:23:32
Lots of good choices, for Farm or occasional use why not find and buy a good used one? Check your local Craigs List in tools and Farm and garden. I would highly recommend that the welder you get be an AC DC should top out at 225- 250 Amps. Both the later made Sears & Wards welders were made by Century and the little Century are great machines. Used with some things such as helmet, leads, maybe some rod these can be had for as little as $50 to about $150, and will work for the rest of your life for home use. The Miller Thunder Bolt 250 AC-DC is a step up and used will be a little more. I seen a Century Wards sell for $25 on Craigs list and a Miller AC only 250amp $35 on the local Craigs list. Look for a welder that has a crank or continuous adjustment rather than tap plugs, they have a higher duty cycle at the lower setting than the tap type. Look around used they are out there for very low prices. Just dont expect to find a Wire feed for this kind of dough.
