Have a 9N tractor, unsure of current gear oil used. I've seen a lot of conflicting viewpoints, some posted in these forums of what's the best: GL-1, GL-3, etc.... Not wanting to beat a dead horse here, but I'm hoping to get some conclusive feedback so I know which way to go. What seems clear is to make sure it is yellow metal safe. I live in Maine, will use the tractor year round.

Thanks for your help.

I know that many people here do not like the thin oil. However in the winter time I really like it. My hydraulic works very well without having to wait for the oil to warm up. Also it is easy to shift the gears. I use it year round but I would also add in that my hydraulic will hold up a heavy load on a warm day for about 30 min. The only down side is that I do have some pump knock on a heavy load. I think the number on the thin oil is 134. B. Jones

GL-1 just like Henry and Harry recommended in 1940.

Dan has the answer, there will never be a consensus or for that matter probably conclusive proof to put all the urban legends to rest.

Kinda like in the old days, if lightning struck a tree and you did not want it to die one remedy was to take a ball bat and give it a good beating. However, you had to make sure a black cat did not cross your path on the way to the tree.

Pass the pop corn pease.

I put in the light stuff and my pump knocked and had plenty of leaks. I put in the GL-1 90W and the knock went away and the leaks slowed down. A little slow at -20F for a few minutes but big deal. There is my 2 cents worth.
