I have noticed some say never back on to the trailer when loading your tractor. Most all say to just drive it straight up on the trailer. Could someone explain why this is and why not to back it on????

It really doesn't matter as long as you get enough weight on the tongue.

The trailer is NOT going to "rear up" if you have the proper ball for your hitch. N tractors are NOT heavy enough to pick up the back of any full sized pick up.
Being able to load it forward or backward easily is dependent on the skill of the driver. Both are safe.

I usually load mine forward with or without implements.

Russ... Yes, people haul N's on single axle trailers everyday. The average N only weighs around 2400 - 2500 pounds. A trailer with a 3500 pound axle will handle it just fine.

I am wondering if anyone has used a single axle trailer to haul an N?

russ, using a single axle trailer to haul a N is extreamly unrecomended, the reason is stability, while a commercial single axle trailer may be rated for the weight, with a tractor you just cant get it distrubuted right, your tractor sits on 4 wheels, and no mater how you load it you cant get the weight sitting right so what happens is the trailer either has too much weight foward of the axle, or too much weight in back of the axle the result is usualy a sever whipping action when you get going and if your not real good, it usually will wreck tractor, trailer and tow vehicle, it just isnt worth the risk

You didn't say what tractor you have, but an 8N is too fast in reverse to do much of anything. My 8N has oversize rear tires which exacerbates the problem. Most trailer ramps are not as steep as the hills here in SW MO, so I always use first gear and drive on.

I find it easier to drive it on forward, as long as the load puts enough weight on the tongue to prevent sway. That said, trailer I use is long enough to fit tractor + any 3 point implement without undue weight behind the double axles & the 350 dually I haul with will handle most any reasonable tongue weight without squatting much.

Smokeys:

I usually back onto a trailer, especially if there is weight on the lift.

Trailer ramps are usually steep and your tractor will not rear up when backing on.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Actually that's what I was thinking and that's why I asked. I was thinking of it rearing up. I'll mostly be loading it up with the bush hog on the back.

Also mine seems to be a tad light in front when I'm bush hogging especially making tight turns. Is there weights that I can put on the front? Right now I'm using a loggers chain wrapped around the front bumper.

The general rule is that you want 10% of the loaded trailer weight on the tongue. One back on problem is that you have less traction with your tractor going backwards uphill and wet muddy conditions may not make it easy to get on. It is also easier to get it on straight going forwards. Going bacwards and trying to watch the back end you may forget to watch your front wheel fall off the side of the trailer!

There was a post not long ago that, I believe, said that loading this way would place more weight on the trailer wheels instead of the truck bumper giving better handling and stability.

Depends on several factors, where the weight winds up on a trailer's axles and on the hitch.

My tandem axle 16' flatbed can be loaded with either of my tractors facing either direction and still have proper weight distribution. If my Jubilee is being hauled by itself, usually pull it on-back it off. If a heavy implement is attached to the three point hitch, usually back it on.

One of my cousins has an ultra HD 24' trailer that can haul his Jubilee and his 861 at the same time, but I wouldn't wanta drag that set up around. He pulls it with a one ton Ford van.

I adjust tractor/load placement to the point where my truck (GMC 1500 Z71) suspension drops about 2" to 3", which is about the correct hitch weight for my set up. Others will be different, depending on the tractor and the trailer.
