Starting to get humid here in Central Iowa and my shop floor, metal work benches, tool cabinets, tools, and tractor and sweating very bad. Any one found a way to prevent this? Cant talk the wife into central air for the shop so thats not an option (would be nice wouldnt it?) I've got two ceiling fans but that doesnt seem to help matters any. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the end ventilation fans mentioned earlier are a good idea. you can also buy them with a temperature and humidity type thermostat.
also... try to keep air moving out of the building. ceiling/roof area ventilation can help.

there was a good discussion on the ventillating aspects on this board a few months ago... might try the archives

good luck

Dehumidifyer won't work real well unless your shop is tight, but it might do some good. It might freeze up unless the air temp is above 65F. This idea sounds goofy, but you might try adding some heat to bring the temp of the tools, benches, etc above the dew point of the air. Probably wouldn't take much, especially if you circulate it.

I have the same issue here in NH. Cool nights, warm days. I haven't worked it yet, but I think the answer is in a combination of ventilation and heating. With the emphasis on heat. I've been looking into propane fired, forced hot air systems that would stand in a corner. But they're pricey, ~$800-$1000. I doubt a de-humidifier, in my case, would be able to prevent condensation. As a partial stop gap, I cover and WD the heck out of things.

You'll have to change the air faster. With all the hog farms that are going out of business, you should be able to find some end-wall ventilating fans cheap. You might even be able to find some with the variable speed thermostat that varies the speed automatically. Install one or two fans in the end wall of the shop and adjust the air flow until the floor dries out.

Go buy a De-humidifier. It will pay for itself in rusted and ruined tools.

I have a 40' X 60' Shop, will a regular dehumidifier even come close to helping?

That is about the same size as mine. When its humid I will pull out over a gallon of water a day. Works fine.
