I really like this forum! Been visiting for few months and find info most helpful as i am new owner of Paps Jubilee(NAA34078).She set for 10 yrs. and has been a challenge to recover. Thanks to you all or i would still be working on her. Mounted rear mower and to the field,1st gear trams so fast its hard to make a clean cut.No H/L range lever beside gear shift. Can the trans be modified for H/L range? Is this a minor upgrade or major change? Thanks again for your help. PapII

Hi

Cut quality varies with vegetation charactheristics if weed or hay or brush.

Personaly to have a good clean cut I take only the half of the mower width and return in opposite direction. It picks the plants missed by the first pass and chop already cut hay in tiny bits.

It does not take twice gas because 1/2 load
aprox 1/2 less gas it makes a beautiful clean cut and is easyer on the tractor.
And the bonus: 2 times mutch seat time.

My 2¢

The jube will do OK with a bush hog in 1st gear at 1500 rpm, which is the correct speed for pto at 536 rpm. If you do put in a Sherman, it will need to run at full throttle to make pto speed and will be a little slower, but not much. My NAA (OW) can do that either way, but I think I like 1500 RPM with Sherman in middle range with the gas at 3 bucks a gallon. I should mention that I have cut my 60 acres several times and know it very well, so I can go a little faster safely.

Thanks for the response, you guys are great!More info: first time out was with rear mount 6ft cutter bar. After few white knuckle trips around lower meadow and to many breakaways (safety release/reset) went for new KK 5ft mower,PTO clutch. 1st gear still fast for turns on hill, but better.Proofmeter broke, top of shopping list.Tires are 12-28s, filled and set allout. This baby will fly 4th gear on the hardtop. Thanks again. Pappy, if you're PTO is running at 536 RPM, your ground speed in first gear should be around 2 1/2 miles per hour. I find this extremely slow in mowing with my Jubilee. I usually run in third gear and use second only when into some tall stuff. Be sure your mower blades are sharp, and that the mower is slightly lower in front than in the rear.

Biggest problem is if you put in a sherman tranny in front of the tranny you have it also slows down or speeds up the PTO which will cause you problems with PTO type work so that will not be much if any help

PapII.

We farmed with Fords and Fergusons for many years. Used 1st or 2nd gear with bush hog and mostly 2nd gear with a sickle bar mower. These sppeds would be comparable to your jubilee.

Do not run engine at WOT as this will run the pto too fast. Rated speed for pto is 540 rpm. Engine speed should b e set at a little over half throtle. If your Jubilee has a tach use that to get the right engine speed.

Hope this helps. Have fun but be careful. steveormary

There"s no way to change your transmission . You need a Shermen hi/lo trans added by splitting the tractor & installing it inside the transmission case . It"s not a hard job at all . If I can do it , you can too . Email me at callj.j.s@verizon.net & I can direct you to someone that may have a hi/lo for you .It"ll take a certain one for your tractor . God bless, Ken

A sherman trans is of -no- help in this situation... As the ground speed slows.. so does the pto speed.

Doesn't a Sherman also slow down the PTO speed?

Seem to recollect a relative who once owned a Jubilee with a Sherman, complaining that mowing in low range also slowed his PTO speed below the effective operation RPMs of the bush hog.

First gear in a Jubilee is marginally too fast for some jobs, but mine works fine with a Dearborn flail mower, at reduced engine RPMs.

IIRC, ground speed is between 3 and 4MPH in first gear at max engine RPMs?
