Heat helped a lot with getting the arm onto the splined shaft. However, with about half an inch remaining, the thing locked up. Persuasion with BFH only made shaft and lift arm on other side start to come out of housing. Was able to install washer and 2 bolts on new arm side. Seems to work Okay, but have half an inch of spline shaft exposed between lift arm and housing. Is this okay to run ??

To my eye the splines looked okay, No torquing or twisting -- cleaned everything up as advised earlier. The lift arm had actually broken a previous owner"s weld. I dragged a triangular file and machinist"s scribe across all the splines. This 8N gets minimal use -- and this winter is getting torn down for brakes, refittting of almost all components that can wear out, pulling trumpets and a split for new clutch and whatever else may be found. I just don"t want to tear up functional hydraulics. BTW -- It runs like a top -- One rev max on 6 volts and she purrs. I work for the USAF and have been gone for a while, go figure -- What happened to Farmer Dawn ??? or am I just a little out of step and missing her posts?

Did you chack the condition of the splines while it was off. A buddy just replaced his a week or so ago and when he got the broken lift arm off, he noticed the splines were a little mangled. He cleaned them up with a file and the new arm went on pretty easy and sucked right in when the end bolts were tightened.

I would say run it, and regularly keep tightening the bolts.

Did you try heating it around the outside again?
