Recently I drained my tranny/hydraulics fluid. Rinsed it out several times with diesel. It appeared to be very clean as much major work had been done on it before I bought it last year. While it was dry I replaced the PTO shaft. I refilled with TSC 134 fluid.

Now, I immediately started getting a pretty good leak around the PTO seal, I have a fairly fast (20 seconds!) leak down when I have an implement on the 3 point. There seems to be a slight knocking sound when the PTO is engage, especially while operating the lift, and there seems to be some slight leaks around the axle seals that were never there before. I was careful not to fill past the bottom bolt hole of the right side inspection plate but maybe the thin 134 is still slashing over the axle?

I live in Texas. It can be quite warm here. Is it possible, or likely that all of these issues stem from the lighter, thinner 134 fluid and should I drain it and refill with gear oil (GL1?)

I think you just got a bad seal in the new PTO shaft assembly. Those aftermarket replacement assemblies are either Indian or Chinese made and not the same quality as Ford.

Don, the leak is definitely from around the seal. The bolts are clean and dry. I used the same bolts on the new shaft that were on the old one. They're only about an inch or so long and they are all the same length.

Dell, I installed a brand new PTO shaft. All I did was slide the old one out and slide the new one in and tightend the bolts. How could I have cause the seals to fail? Or might the seal have been bad out of the box?

Ken..... .I don't know, I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs.

Iff'n you replace the entire PTO shaft as an assembly, you still might have mucked up the square gasket. Go out and INSPECT. Park yer tractor nose deep innna ditch so you don't haffta drain 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil. 4-bolts zip-zip, 15-mins and you'll know..... ...Dell

Ken...it might not be the seal.If you used too long of bolts when you installed the PTO,you could have busted thru the housing. Those are supposed to be blind holes.Make sure exactly where its leaking. don b

Ken..... ...you write..... ."While it was dry I replaced the PTO shaft..... ...Now, I immediately started getting a pretty good leak around the PTO seal"..... ..new seals should not leak. Lousy installation job of new seal causes leaks but also ruins the seal. REPLACE yer PTO seal with NEW and be more careful so you don't muck the seal cross-wize.

Did you muck-up the p/n: 9N-4129 square cardboard gasket???

You write..... ."I live in Texas. It can be quite warm here. Is it possible, or likely that all of these issues stem from the lighter, thinner 134 fluid and should I drain it and refill with gear oil (GL1?)"..... ..Yes and NO. Not all yer "issues" are caused from lighter 134D oil....but YES, change to heavier GL-1 for your Texas heat..... ..Dell
