Sherman Step Up Why?

Been watching all the discussions of ground speed and rototilling. Very informative.

My question for pure curiosity is what was the purpose of the step up sherman? The consensus is the tractor is already a bit too fast, why make it faster? Step down I can see.

I for one only use the high range occasionaly to make sure it still works. I tried step-up 4th once on a paved road. Scared the heck out of me!!

So what was the step up sherman for?

Bonus question. Any way to make a step up into a step down?

Thanks for the info. Both the getting down the road faster and fuel economy make sense but sure seems both are at the margin.

OD 4th @ 24mph? No wonder I thought is was a wild ride!!


Dell are you sure it is only the forks that change from step up to step down? Seems like some enterprising machinest would be making forks like crazy no?

Phil..... .back in the before time, farmers used to drive down the road to the NEXT farmfield for more plowing or whatever. They didn't have todays luxury of flatbed trailers. The Step-up (OverDrive) converted a topspeed 12.12mph 9N into a buggy-toothed (keep yer mouth closed and glasses on) topspeed 18.12mph hi-way burner. Yer 4-speed 8N is even FASTER, 4th OD is 23.12mph, 4th straight is only 15.47mph.

Surprizingly enuff, first and OD is almost the same speed (6.26mph) as 3rd straight (7.40mph) without OD.

You can use OD in 1st,2nd,3rd,4th gears. Forward for straight drive; aft for OverDrive. OD ratio is 0.669 to 1. While the OD and UD gearbox and gears are the "same", its the internal shifter forks that change'em from OD to UD. Shifter forks NOT AVAILABLE..... ...HTH, Dell the shift-less

I agree my 9n has one... I use it while brush hogging in 1st gear because to pto speed is increased and I can run at a lower engine rpm for the same speed. From what I've read it was originally to improve fuel economy so you could use less throttle for the same speed. I am considering removing mine when I replace the clutch/ do an engine rebuild ... I just need to aquire the original parts that were removed to install it, not sure of all the parts needed.

9n 2n's are slow. I just ran my 2n 8 miles through town to the Ford mechanic and it took me an hour and 5 minutes. My 640 is (turned up) governed around 2500 rpm and it will fly in overdrive. You have to respect it if the road is bumpy, but it is a definite time saver. The overdrive can be turned into a combo by trading it, and about three hundered dollars to someone who has a combo.
