Dell,

I have a 1948 8N. It has throttle problems and from reading on the site it seems that it is a governor problem. Also checked this by putting a different 8N governor on the tractor and the tractor ran correctly. Now for the real question, I took the governor off the tractor and looked it over for wear. Found a little bit of wear on the balls and a groove worn into the governor housing. What type of rebuilt do I need to do to the governor, complete or will just an internal rebuild solve my problems?

Thanks,

Hiney

Flat spots on the balls are bad news as are grooves of any sort in the flat or cone race. They make it difficult or impossible for the governor to operate correctly. You will need to evaluate the balls, races, and bearings for condition and decide what parts you need. A couple different kit levels are available and some parts are available separately as well. The groove around the inside of the housing is from serious race and ball wear or incorrect shimming allowing the balls to slip past the outside of the cone race and contact the housing. As long as it hasn't worn a hole in it, that typically won't cause a problem if you correct the internal problems. When adjusted correctly and in good condition, the races will not spread far enough to allow the balls to break the plane of the edge of the races. Experience has shown me that in cases like yours, enough parts need replaced that installing the complete internal kit is the best choice. Not cheap at around $100, but it is preadjusted and completely assembled. Drop it in your housing, put in the retaining screw, and bolt it on. Also check the condition of the governor arms. The inner arm can wear inside its bore where it piots on the housing. This can cause binding and erratic operation as well. Shimming can compensate for wear, but if it is excessive AND you have internal troubles, it's better to just replace the whole thing and go on. Pricey, but no more worries. A screwy governor can make seat time a lot less enjoyable.
