Hmm ... winterizing? Can you put a block heater in an 8N?

A friend of mine asked me this when I said that they sometimes have difficulty starting in extreme cold, and I honestly thought to myself, "Wow ... if you could, this would be a great way to prevent a motor freezing over in the winter."

So what about it guys? Can you?

I live in Michigan and it gets cold enough. I have always been impressed at how many cracked blocks there are out there because the owner didn't put anti-freeze in the cooling system. Don't know where you are at but every once in a while my power goes out. I would hate to have to worry about a cracked block.

Magnetic heaters are common around here but nobody uses them to keep the block from freezing. The intent is to keep the oil warm so it will crank faster.

Local road commission barn burned down a few years ago due to over-loaded circuits because of block heaters. Final investigation revealed the use of extension cords that were too light for the load. Seems that Homer Simpson's cousin works for the county.

i live in wisconsin and i bet its colder here than virginia in the winter. i agree, if your n is up to snuff then it will start. mine does anyway, each time and every time.

i say no to water heater and possibly to magnetic if you are going to insist.

They do make block heaters that fit but they are pricy. I use a hose heater and it works great. The magnetic heaters work well too, but I put mine on the hydaulic tank. The heat from the hose heater does pass warmth to the block by some way. When it gets minus 25 I wouldnt try starting mine without it.

There are ways to do it but you still need antifreeze in them. You could plumb one into the drain plug and then back to either the upper or lower hose but it would take some figuring out to do it but as the old saying goes where theres a will theres a way.

Art..... .NO, you can NOT install a freeze plug block heater in the flathead N-Engine. There ain't room for the heater element in the block.

Just use good 50/50 anti-freeze.

Iff'n you really gotter starter when its that cold, use a "magnetic" block heater on the INTAKE manifold. That'll starter better'n enny engine water heater scheme. Warm battery heater is also a BETTER starter scheme than hot-water heater schemes.

And iff'n yer really cold, wear snow-mobileer suit..... ..Dell

Well, yea, you could use one to keep it from freezing..... but that's why anti-freeze was invented.

Block heaters just make an engine easier to start because the oil stays warm & does not turn to molasses at 30 below. Many are made to fit in the Welch plug (aka 'freeze' plug) holes & have heating elements on them. Some are dipstick heaters that actually warm the oil. Battery blankets work well. Living in the South is best!

"Wow ... if you could, this would be a great way to prevent a motor freezing over in the winter."

That would be antifreeze. Block heaters keep the oil warm and make it easier to turn the engine over.
