I check the oil every time I use my 48 8n.....and it always appears to be low. I use it once a week or so. There is NOT a leaky mess underneath where I park the tractor. Anyone have any guesses where and how I am burning(?) the oil. Everything else with the tractor is running very good.

Crawl under the tractor and find the drain hole for the bellhousing under the flywheel. It should have a cotter pin in it kinda rattling around to keep the hole clear. Make sure the cotter pin is present and moves freely. It wouldn't hurt to blow some compressed air up through the hole to make sure there isn't sludge on top of it blocking the hole. What I'm getting at is that if that drain hole is plugged and you've developed a rear main seal leak, it might be pumping the bellhousing full of oil. That is not good for your clutch. Have a look!

also along with these other good replies i will add that maybe you should use a little heavier oil.

First, stick your finger up the exahust pipe. When you pull out, do you find sooty/oily film,(should be fairly dry)???
Second, pull one spark plug at a time. If they are heavy with oil, and fouled, then you probably have oil rings wearing out. If the N is running good as you say, I would not worry too much at this point. If the engine starts to miss, then, I would suspect, a ring job will be in order.

If the inside of your exhaust pipe is black and sooty that's where it is going.

could be that rings and sleeves are a little loose and the oil is burning off.
