What years did the fenders have the Ford logo in script on them?

My early '48 8N S/N 72697 has the Ford script fenders, and I believe they are the originals.

Smiths Ford Tractor site

I had looked there and that's what caused my curiosity.

My grandfather gave me his 2N. the engine SN can't be seen, its smooth where it should be.

I've got it narrowed down to a 1944 1/2 to a 1947. He bought it used in 1947 from the Ford dealer and it's got the tube radius arms, and 3 speed.
The fenders have the script logo, and the identify your tractor says they didn't start until 1950.

The fenders were on the tractor when he got it. The Ford dealer must have also painted it the 8n color scheme since he got it that way.

You said the tractor had the script fenders on it when your grandfather got it from the dealer. The question I have is if your grandfather bought it new or used? If it was used, then the dealer may have painted it in the 8N colors and updated the fenders to make it look more like an 8N and therefore easier to sell. As to the age of your tractor, have you tried looking for casting codes on the rear axle (can't remember if it's the front facing side or rear facing side that has the code). Also, some N's have a clear date code on the bottom of the hydraulic pump casing. You have to crawl under the tractor to see it, and maybe do some gentle cleaning. I know my 8N has one, but I'm not sure if the 9N's had codes there or not.

Yeah, if it's a 3 speed then those fenders were added later by someone and aren't original. My N is a 1939 9n, but I put an aengine from a 1944 2N in it, and it has a script hood. Lots of interchaning has been done over the years on these old tractors. Some parts will interchange between the 9N-2N-8N, but others don't.

Have seen lots of 8N tractors with the script fenders and some on Jubilees, but my Jubilee (#215xx) has "plain" fenders and I'm pretty sure the fenders are original to the tractor.

A cousin has a Jubilee with Ford script fenders and he thinks they're the original fenders on his tractor.

I think maybe the script fenders were optional, and that many yellow/green owners (who wanted a tractor that did real work and never break) would order them without the script. ;Þ

Might could be the reason.

Lots of them old Y/G critters didn't even need fenders. Maybe they didn't go fast enough to throw any mud? ;o)
