I saw a message with similiar problem, but still have questions. Was having a problem with fuel leaking from top of bowl. Replaced the whole thing. Still having a problem. When bowl is tight enough to stop the leaking, no fuel will drain into the bowl. What causes this?
Also having trouble starting after replacing points, condenser, rotor & distributor cap. Will start after setting overnight but will die within a minute. I believe that the two problems are related. Is there an adjustment on the gas valve to correct this?

All,
Thanks again for all the help. Took the 8n to a local shop. turns out I put the float back in the Carb upside down. Too many interruptions during rebuild I guess. They also fixed my Charging problem. Seems that whatever they did also fixed several other small issues. Runs better than it ever has. Now I have about $2500 invested in it. about $30 more and it will be completely ready to do some heavy work. I will have about 4 months to get things right on my place before I head to the Mid-east for my 3rd trip. Thanks again for all the help from everyone. Take care.

Getting a good spark. Reopened the carb on local advice to check small valve screw inside the carb. Recleaned and replaced. Put on new condenser. Still not working. Taking it to the shop tomorrow and letting the old(REAL OLD) pro to work on it. Thanks for the help.

A one minute run time is a bad condenser.

You won't get any gas in the bowl until the float opens in the carb. Just turn the gas on & start the tractor. The bowl should fill up as the carb needs gas. As a good rule of thumb, a 1 - 2 minute run times is usually the condenser, ballast resistor, or vacuum lock....or, failure to turn the gas on. A 5 minute run time is usually fuel screens. A 15 minute run time is usually the ignition switch. A one hour run time & then restarts after it cools down is usually the coil. Turn the gas on & remove the gas cap. See what happens. If it starts & runs a few minutes then cuts off, remove the bolt in the carb bowl & check for fuel flow. When you post back, make sure you tell us if it is a 6v or 12v, front or side distributor. Makes diagnosing problems a lot easier if we know what we're working on..... ..

Bruce,
Thanks. I haven't dealt with tractors for over 30 years so am new to this. The 48 8N has a front mount Dist, 12V conversion (not by me). just rebuilt carb. Fuel does flow into carb. I have used bottom drain to check for fuel in carb. Fuel comes out. Tractor still won't start until it sits for a few hours.

So, you have a good fuel flow out of the bottom of the carb, huh? Have you checked for spark as soon as it stops running? Take an old plug, open the gap to 3/16. As soon as it dies, ground the plug to a clean rust & paint free spot on the head, connect a plug wire, turn the key on & crank the engine. You should have a bright blue spark. If it's weak & yellow, or no spark at all, post back & you will get plenty of help. And, when you post back, we're going to need to know what resistors (if any) are in the ignition circuit & the alternator type. You could have fried a coil or ballast resistor. Or, maybe just a bad ignition switch. But, before you do anything else, check for spark.

Probably a bad condenser. New ones now days seem to be bad right out of the box. I would put you old one on and see if that works. If it doesn't then you may have a bad coil but most of the time they will run about an hour if its a bad coil but I guess if its bad enough it could heat up fast and cause the problem. Also one thing to do is as soon as it stops check for spark. If you have no spark or poor spark you know the problem is in the ignition
